My Freshman

You travel literally all day, waking at 3:15 am without a care because you know your day will end with a hug from him. When you finally arrive, you have to wait two long hours to see him because he’s in an orchestra rehearsal, and it feels like the time will never pass.
At the first sight of him, your heart skips a beat as he strides across the hall, confident and yet obviously anxious to see you. ... READ MORE
Shoelessly Pro-Life

Taking off your shoes for the pro-life cause?
It seems strange, but it’s exactly what students at the University of Northern Colorado are doing this week, as they hold their second annual BEARfoot for Babies event. (You can read more about the event at their website.)
According to the article, the students go barefoot to show solidarity for the unborn and also as a way of starting conversations about... READ MORE
First Impressions Count

It’s College Fair season here in Central California, which means that I’m spending a few nights this week representing my alma mater at area events where students come to obtain information from a variety of colleges.
Last night, I was reminded again of the very sad state of manners in today’s high school students. Out of approximately 800 students attending last nights event, exactly TWO students... READ MORE
Dorm Life

Today was the official move in day for Eric, his first “real” day of college life following five days of pre-orientation. First thing this morning we met Eric’s new roommate, Nathan, and his amazing family. The rest of the day was spent setting up their room, making numerous trips to the CVS for forgotten supplies (thank goodness it’s a close walk!), meeting new friends and doing other “set up”... College Life Begins

Greg and I successfully navigated our journey to rainy Boston yesterday, completely unprepared for the weather. Somehow in the midst of all the packing, we neglected to see the reports calling for rain the next few days. We arrived at our hotel toting a mandolin, an electric bass, four rolling suitcases, and not a single jacket or umbrella. We looked like a drowning middle aged rock band, but our... READ MORE
Dorm Essentials?

HI gang! As you read this, Greg and I are winging our way to Boston where we’ll spend the next few days moving Eric into his new dorm room at Harvard. On the agenda for later today is a trip to a local Target to buy some supplies for his dorm room.
We have a basic list which includes things like laundry detergent, printer paper and a fan. Since we’ve all had to fly to campus rather than drive,... READ MORE
Family Changes and Feelings

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Elizabeth and I discuss recent changes in our homes. As Elizabeth and I both watch children move out of the “nest” and into exciting new phases of life, we chat about how moms deal with the emotions related to these types of changes. When you have times of emotion in your life, do you hide your true feelings from... READ MORE
College Roll Call

I’ve been majorly preoccupied the past few days with the launching of my son Eric off to college. I’ll be sure to continue to share insights on that during the next few days here on the blog - we leave tonight to drive to San Francisco. Early tomorrow morning, we’ll put Eric on a plane to Boston, where he’ll be attending pre-orientation at Harvard. Then next Tuesday, Greg and I will fly out to... READ MORE
Countdown to College

This is one of those “real world” types of blog posts where I open the window into our home and give you a peek into the chaos that sometimes is the Hendey household.
We are on the “countdown” to college. Next Thursday, Greg and I will drive to San Francisco and put Eric on an airplane at 6 am. He’ll land in Boston, take the subway on his own to Cambridge, and begin his college career at Harvard... READ MORE
Going Back

This weekend I was blessed to attend my college reunion.
Not my class reunion, but the reunion of my entire college, a now-defunct school that has a total alumni population of only a couple hundred people.
I helped organize the reunion, and we were excited to have over a hundred attendees, including several dozen children. If there’s anything better than seeing old friends and classmates, it’s seeing... READ MORE
