Battle of the Baby Names
by Lori Hadacek Chaplin in Family on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 6:00 AM
Do all parents agonize, banter, argue, and cajole about baby names as much as my husband David and I do? David likes unusual names and names of boxers and I like old fashioned or ethnic sounding names. Luckily, we’re both are in an agreement about avoiding popular or trendy names.
Our fourth baby will be appearing on the scene in mid to late November and we’re finding it tough to agree on a girl’s name (we’re not planning on finding out the sex of the baby before birth). After several months of... READ MORE
Coffee, Tea, God & Me
by Heidi Bratton in Faith on Monday, October 18, 2010 6:00 AM
Tea is a stranger to me. Coffee is an old friend. Coffee tastes like comfort and feels like being connected. Coffee smells like relaxation and looks like afternoon sunlight. This cozy relationship is a bit of a problem for me, however, because for health reasons I am supposed to learn to embrace a cup of herbal tea more often than one of coffee.
I didn’t set out to love coffee. In fact, it took me several years, several lumps of sugar, and a lot of cream to warm up to its bitterness. My love... READ MORE
6 New Saints, 3 Ways to Be One
by Tom and April Hoopes in Faith on Saturday, October 16, 2010 6:00 AM
Sunday, Oct. 17, is the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C, Cycle II).
Papal
At 10am Mass in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Benedict XVI will canonize six new saints. Two are quite familiar to the English-speaking world.
Blessed André Bessette (1845-1937) was a Holy Cross brother who served as the doorman at Quebec’s Notre Dame College for 40 years, among other menial responsibilities. He recommended devotion to St. Joseph to whoever would listen. He visited the sick and anointed them with oil from... READ MORE
6 Tips for a Happy Marriage
by Kate Wicker in Marriage on Thursday, October 14, 2010 12:00 PM
Seven years ago I was a blushing bride dreaming of her happily ever after. After enduring a rigorous marital boot camp at my church’s Pre-Cana program, I thought I knew a lot about love and marriage.
I knew squat.
Here are six things I’ve learned (mostly the hard way) since my days as a blushing bride.
1. Keep a sense of humor. For our sixth anniversary, my husband Dave and I took what we thought was going to be a relaxing trip to the beach to celebrate our marriage. First mistake: We brought our... READ MORE
A Hidden Kind of Suffering
by Tony Rossi in Health on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 12:00 PM
“Infertility is one of the most painful things I have ever seen a couple or woman suffer with,” says Dr. Anne Mielnik, Director and co-founder of Gianna: The Catholic Healthcare Center for Women which opened less than a year ago in New York City. “For most of them, it is a hidden suffering.”
Dr. Mielnik is doing her best to heal that pain, but unlike many doctors, she’s doing it in a way that’s completely pro-life.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) has become the default method by which infertility is... READ MORE
In the Company of Angels
by Pat Gohn in Faith on Sunday, October 10, 2010 1:15 PM
Hebrews 13:2 comes to mind whenever I hear a knock at the front door… “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” It reminds me that there is a spiritual realm here on earth that I often forget or ignore. There are angels among us.
For the last several weeks, this series has focused on the first line of the Creed: God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of all things seen and unseen. Today we’re discussing one aspect of the unseen world: angels. ... READ MORE
Trust, But Verify
by Dr. Ray Guarendi in Family on Friday, October 08, 2010 6:00 AM
Q. Our kids are making their way through their teen years, with predictable challenges for us and opportunities for them. Can you offer any ideas for better supervising their increasing social freedom?
A. A wise mother — in parenting, wisdom often comes through an accumulation of dumb decisions — told me her kids never went anywhere without her knowing the five Ws: Who, What, Where, When and Why.
Who will be with you? Possibly the most critical W. You don’t need to be a shrink to know kids’ choice... READ MORE
Pleasures of Baby-Watching
by Lori Hadacek Chaplin in Reviews on Wednesday, October 06, 2010 6:00 AM
(We are giving away three copies of this DVD! Enter here for your chance to win!)
I never get tired of watching babies. My own babies mesmerize, amuse, and captivate me. I get a thrill watching them develop and learn. When I saw a trailer in the movie theater for Babies, I knew I had to see it.
Babies, produced by French documentarian Thomas Balmès, is a testament to the beauty and sacredness of the human life; it is intrinsically a pro-life film, if not intentionally.
The film simultaneously follows... READ MORE
Honoring Vocations
by Susan Windley-Daoust in Family on Monday, October 04, 2010 6:00 AM
You’ve got to love a woman who uses the phrase “mad as a hornet.”
Andrea Roberts is the woman who founded a Christian ministry named Reece’s Rainbow. After giving birth to her son Reece, who has Down syndrome, she began a journey that led to counseling women who gave birth to children with Down Syndrome, which led to working with Down syndrome adoptions, which led to … well, getting as mad as a hornet.
You see, in many part of the United States, there is a waiting list for adoptive parents who want... READ MORE
Marching Through Life
by Tom and April Hoopes in Faith on Friday, October 01, 2010 6:00 AM
Sunday, Oct. 3, is the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The U.S. bishops promote it as Respect Life Sunday.
Respect Life
It’s a little dated as a song, but it’s a nice little history lesson. In 1974, Seals and Croft recorded a song called “Unborn Child.” Some of the lyrics: “Oh unborn child, if you only knew just what your momma was plannin’ to do. … Oh tiny bud, that grows in the womb, only to be crushed before you can bloom. Mama stop! Turn around; go back; think it over. … Oh no momma, just let... READ MORE
