This new section in our website will act as a marketplace, bringing together information, resources, and networks involving Episcopal Women doing projects and trips outside the US which work for human rights for women.

This space will be open for Episcopal Women to post announcements of work going on, resources needed, and contacts to be made that reflect their gender work of the Beijing Platform for Action and the MDGs.  These postings will be listed by region and country in alphabetical order so if you want to know what Episcopal Women are doing in the Sudan, those projects will be listed under Sudan.

Kathy Deasy � HOPE worldwide is an international charity whose mission is to change lives by harnessing the compassion and commitment of dedicated staff and volunteers to deliver sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and needy.  They are opening a new 7-bed emergency/outpatient department at Malalali Hospital.  HOPE worldwide has received extended funding for an emergency department training program and are looking for a M.D., (ob/gyn, family physician, emergency, medical, etc.) a midwife, nurse practitioner, etc.  Training to begin mid to late January 2009.

Susanna Williams � This project began in a slum outside of Nairobi, Kenya as a means of improving the lives of 100 million slum dwellers and to develop a health and social support system for the orphans and vulnerable children who live in the slums.  The focus is on women and children, with a particular emphasis on the girl child.  Girls� empower- ment groups have been initiated that address issues of discrimination that girls routinely face (such as a lack of education, self esteem issues, income generation and cultural bias.

Kimberly Haeringer � Before the wars ravaged Liberia, The Bromley School was one of its premier schools which served as an orphanage and school for young girls.  Since the wars ended, members of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia have traveled to The Bromley School to build faith and to educate so that the country can restore Bromley to its former glory and return it to self-sufficiency.  The �buzz� in Liberia is centering on equality for women-especially the education of women.

The immediate goals revolve around obtaining enough food and funds to keep the facility operational, to build housing for staff in order to attract more teachers, and to acquire needed resources to further its mission.

Don Thomas � GAIA (Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in June 2000 in response to the global HIV and AIDS catastrophe.  GAIA is presently at work in Malawi, a small country in central Africa.  In Malawi 80,000 people die of AIDS-related illnesses each year leaving well over 500,000 children alone and orphaned.  GAIA is in need of funding in order to continue its work.

Rev. Jeremy and Penny Lucas � Mission to Namibia

Namibia has the 5th largest rate of HIV infection in the world as well as the highest turburculous infection rate in the world.  There are over 100,000 AIDS orphans and the life expectancy for children living in Nambia is 43 years.

In recent years, Namibia has also experienced an extreme clergy shortage and without help they will be unable to meet the pastoral needs of their people.  In June 2006, several members of the Diocese of Alabama met and traveled to Namibia to gather information and to devise a strategic plan.  This past June, The Rev. Jeremy and Mrs. Penny Lucas began their important missionary work to assist the people of Namibia in addressing these important issues.

Melody Rockwell � The Iowa SwaziCompanions, a team of sixteen Iowans from around the Diocese of Iowa, Rev. Charles Kunene, Swaziland, now serving in southwest Iowa, will accompany the team to his homeland for the 40th anniversary celebration/mission trip along with Bishop Alan Scarfe and his wife Donna.  The focus of this group has been to build and to support the St. Augustine School in Swaziland for young children.  The trip to Swaziland will take place from October 16 - 30, 2008 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Diocese of Swaziland, and to work on mission activities and evangelism.  The team solicits your prayers and support.

Deborah Gardiner � The Women�s Vocational Training Center (WVTC)

The Women�s Vocational Training Center grew out of a mission trip to a women�s conference held in the Diocese of Nebbi.  Topics such as self-esteem, God�s image of his daughters, abuse and forgiveness were discussed.  Today, the WVTC, through education and teaching job skills, is empowering women to improve their lives.  The WVTC offer a literacy program for women who have either dropped out of school or have never attended school.  They solicit your prayers and are in need of your financial support.

Bonnie Peck � St. John in the Wilderness, White Bear, MN is involved in 3 MDG goal projects to support and empower women and children in Uganda.  The MDG group at St. John will have a booth set up at the State Convention in Rochester on October 24-25 outlining these projects.
