Is everyone ready???  : )  I’m not.  Going in again to set up my classroom.

Please say a prayer for my two oldest daughters who have both gone out of state to college this year.  Neither knows anyone in the area.  One to Truman State University, MO and one to the University of New Hampshire while we are in Mississippi.  I never realized how difficult this would be as a parent for your children to be more than a days drive away.  Perhaps I am the one that needs the prayers!

I graduated from Truman State in 2000 and was from Oklahoma. It was a 9 hr drive home and as you know 2-3 hours to an airport. But I can’t say enough about my experience there. I had such a good time. I wasn’t much of a partier, more academically minded, but found lots of friends that were there for the same reasons. It took a bit to get settled in and meet new people, but one of the great things about Truman State, at least when I was there, was that it was small enough you really start to recognize people pretty quickly and how active the Catholic student body was in the Newman center and the local parish, Mary Immaculate I think. There are lots of Catholic students at Truman since Missouri has such a large Catholic population.
I also met my husband there, we’ve been married 10 years and have 3 kids with one due in a couple of weeks. We both give a lot of credit to who we are now to the wonderful people, friends and professors, that we met at Truman. Hope your daughter finds it just as exciting and fulfilling as we did! And if she gets homesick, just keep supporting her, I promise it gets easier and easier.
Lots of care packages from my mom helped early on too!
Definitely praying for your daughters and all those going off to school or jobs or whatever this fall!

I’ll pray for your daughters. My only daughter is a senior, and Truman State is her #1 choice at the moment…however we are only 3 1/2 hours away! We do have many friends/family who have gone there and have recommended it to her/us. Rebecca—thanks for sharing your insights on the Catholic aspect and Newman center—that will be important to us as well. Shannon—I’ll include you in the prayers. My oldest son is a sophomore, only 2 hours away, but I miss him too!

Thank you for your prayers and comments.  I know they have made great choices for themselves.  She has already visited the Newman Center and very excited about the number of Catholics there.  We are somewhat of a minority in the South.

In one of the education or parenting posts sometime this summer, I’m quite certain there was a discussion of a series of books that documented essentially “what to expect from a two year old,” “what to expect from a three year old,” etc.  I have searched F&F high and low and can’t seem to find who the author was of this series.  Do any of you know or have any suggestions?  In particular, our oldest just turned four and I’d really like to read more about what’s expected of her developmentally as we prepare to start some casual preschool homeschooling later this month. I also think it would be helpful in figuring out the best means of discipline, as that has been a real challenge recently.  Thank you!

The Ames and Ilg series posted by CatholicMama is excellent excellent! I may have even been the original recommender!

Thanks, ladies!  I’m quite certain that the Ames series is what I was looking for. So glad to get some insight into these little heads!

How do you locate Catholic (or Christian) homeschool groups in your area? I am in NY (state).  Just for future reference.  Thank you!

Having homeschooled in 4 different states so far, I have found the best method to be worth of mouth.  You can google them, but it’s very hard to find that way.

I’m not sure where in NY you are located but I do know of one in Port Jervis and another in Middletown, NY.  The best way to find out is probably via your church.  HTH!!!

Our son is attending a beautiful and authentically Catholic school where the Faith and Life series is used for faith education.  He is in 8th grade and I’m looking for some opinions from other moms/dads who have used this curriculum.  Do you feel the 7th and 8th grade materials provide thorough preparation for Confirmation?  Did you supplement with anything to further prepare a child to receive this Sacrament?  We are able to register our son to receive the Sacrament as a homeschool family (we aren’t at a parish school) but we want to make sure he is as prepared as possible and don’t have any direction offered by the parish DRE (other than to participate in weekly meetings that don’t consist of too much).  I appreciate the opinions that are routinely offered on Faith & Family.  Thank you!

I know several wonderful Catholic schools that use the Faith and Life series. We used it in our homeschool all the way up to 5th grade. We now use Seton religion books and have for two years. My children (and myself!) prefer them over the Faith and Life books. I’m not sure if its the way they are written, but somehow they comprehend more with the Seton religion books. I too find them more enjoyable to read. Seton also has a Confirmation prep book that is seperate. Perhaps you could supplement him with these two books?

Jennifer, thank you for your suggestion!  I just perused the Seton website and couldn’t find the books you reference.  Do you have titles?  I appreciate your input!  God bless!

No problem smile
Here’s the link: http://www.setonhome.org/curriculum/gradeschool.shtml#grade7

I know it’s grade 7 and your son is in 8th, but that is when they prepare for Confirmation. If you scroll down to 7th grade “Religion”, it will have the book links to click on. Specifically the grade 7 religion text and Confirmation book. God Bless!

Have you tried the TORCH (Traditions of Roman Catholic Homes)website?
http://www.torchhomeschooling.org/
They list local chapters in 19 states so far.
HTH!

I was just reading in our diocesan newspaper that the Catholic schools in our diocese will be starting a new program called Teaching Touching Safety starting in K.  I have a first grader in our local Catholic school and was wondering if anyone else was familiar with the program and if there are any concerns I should have about my 6 y.o participating in it?

My initial reaction is to doubt the validity of any concerns I might have and give the diocese the benefit of the doubt that it will be an acceptable program that will actually help her protect herself.  However, I know I had heard about another program “Talking about Touching” that had been adopted by another diocese that was quite offensive and had a dubious background.  So, I want to ‘trust but verify’ in regard to the Teaching Touching Safety program.  I did google it and found some written materials - none of which looked like anything alarming at the first grade level.  However, there is also a video portion and I don’t know what is in that.  Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!
