It seems not long ago Blockbuster was moving into town forcing the local neighborhood video store out of business. How times have changed. I for one will miss the experience of going to the local video store. Red Box and Netflix just aren't the same, half the time it's impossible to get a new release.
Seriously, when will it die? I always preferred mom and pop shops, in fact there's still around in my neighborhood; 5 to be exact and fully operational with no debt. Even though I have Netflix, I still go there for the more obscured movies that Netflix doesn't carry.
Yep, the days of video stores is coming to an end. Sad, I have fond memories of visiting the video stores with my parents, and later my friends, for just the right video in the mid 80s. This was even before Blockbuster had run out the smaller "mom & pop" video stores. There was something about holding the VHS cover box (usually with styrofoam inside it, not the actual tape), wandering the aisles and arguing about which one to get that you just don't experience sitting by yourself looking at a computer screen. I also remember being thrilled at 15 when my parents finally checked the box that allowed me to rent R movies on my own!

Am I the only one that isn't sad to see video stores die out? All my memories of video stores involve standing around the return section for an hour hoping that I would win the video lottery and a copy of Die Hard (which had been out for a couple months), or whatever flavor of the month that was out would finally be returned while I was there.
It was quite a pain in the ass. I'm not saying Netflix is the resolution as it definitely isn't instant with new releases, but it's a lot faster than the places I used to have to go to to rent a movie (I'm looking at you Family Video).
GOOD, I used to work there awhile ago and I would have to say it was the worst job I ever had.

Not sorry to see it go, since Blockbuster tried to rip me off by sending a late rental charge invoice three months after I had turned in the tape on time. Plus they wanted too much personal information everytime I checked out. The combination of videos and games was a nice step and could've brought me back, but too little too late.
Just a casualty of the Digital Age... first the brick'n'mortars, next the physical media, then downloads only.
I think this is one that everyone saw coming from a mile away. They had all the time in the world to change policies and such to make people happy with them but they never did. Its like they just sat back and said, "Its just a fad" to every change that kept coming along.
They should have been the ones to come up with half the innovations from the last decade+ with the market share and money they had for R&D;, but they just seemed to have sat around.
You'd have also thought that the second they heard of the Redbox concept that they would have rushed to copy and overtake it in the market place, but once again, it seemed like an attitude of, "its just a fad, they won't hurt us at all". "What? People like convenience, paying just a $1 a day, reserving online, and not having to deal with teenage cashiers?"
I'm sorry for all the jobs that will be lost, but I'm sick of companies with all the means in the world for success seemingly taking a back seat to innovation and progress.
Blockbuster, are we now able to say that you have been just a fad?
Haw-Haw, your medium is dying.
I'm not surprised Blockbuster is going bankrupt because now that Redbox and Netflix has come around. Plus people can watch movies on their Xbox360. What's the point of going to the video store? Except for video games of course. I got tired of paying late fees to Blockbuster, so am I happy that they're going bankrupt? Oh yeah.
I'm honestly surprised that they lasted this long.
Now, time to go raid their movies.
This is karma. Blockbuster played bully & upped the price of their rentals when Movie Gallery (their biggest competitor) shut down a fraction of their stores a few years back. Their feeble attempt to buy timed exclusive rental rights from movie studios in order to try and weather Redbox's storm, didn't hold much weight either.
A lot of it is self-inflicted. They stayed too static while Netflix (Streamflix) was catching fire. What's worse, they drove (and continue to drive) out customers with their shenanigans. It's as if the $$ made by charging someone a bogus late fee or falsely claiming a person never returned a movie is going to make up for some of their losses. Isn't losing customers over bullspit worse than getting one late fee from them??
I'll miss when video stores are gone too. Book stores will probably go too. I'll miss those. There's no substitute for walking around, looking the back cover of a DVD (in the day, VHS). You find stuff you'd missed a month ago. You can't do that with Streamflix or Redbox. I've been a Netflix guy for 10 years now. I really like it. But it's got problems too.
I don't feel sorry for BB the company. They screwed mom & pops, their customers, etc... They're also sort of moral freaks, and I don't like that. No love lost for the company itself. I'll just miss video stores. Maybe Family Video will set up stakes when they're gone.
I currently use BB TA because of the 1-month wait on Streamflix. That really p*sses me off. People say you can surely wait another month. I don't like to wait. I often skip stuff in theaters because of society's behavior run amok. If a movie ("The A-Team" is a good example) isn't out for 6 months, I now have to wait 7 because of the studio sweetheart deal. With BB I don't have to. The problem is BB TA is a joke. They NEVER ship me new releases. The only way I can get them is through the in-store exchange (have to be in the store by 2 pm on release day usually). It's very inconvenient, but I'm still doing it. I belong to both Streamflix and BB TA. Have never used Redbox. Probably never will.

These things happen when your selection of films is consistently poor at every single location. The only thing that comes to mind when I hear the word "Blockbuster" is asking "Do you have a copy of (insert movie any video store on the planet should at least carry)?"
Their employees suck, their selection sucks, their judeo-Christian family "values" attitude of doing business sucks, so good riddance.
I was one of the good guys who used to work there because when a customer would bring back a movie late I would just think oh that person has a lot more important things to take care of rather than worrying about taking back Transporter 2 so 95% of the time I would always take off the late fees, I would see people with $100 worth of late fees and I would always say to myself if I was that person I would never pay that so I would feel bad and just off whatever the late fee was.
Clearance sales, here I come.
Oh, darn, I'm really going to miss their rude, unhelpful employees. I'm really going to miss their bad selection and their punitive penalty fees.
They remind me of most daily newspapers. Their arrogance led them to think they didn't have to change their business model, nor even try to adapt to changes in how people get their news and other information.
By the time they did, it was too late. The boat's already sinking.
Same goes for Blockbuster.
It serves those money grubbing assholes right! They always had a shitty selection that was overpriced. Screw Red Box too. They still continue to stick with the mindset that the only films worth viewing are the Blockbusters,. If any small shops still existed, I'd support them, but they're practically nonexistent. Netflix is definitely the best way to go...
