PARIS -- Xavier Beauvois' "Of Gods and Men" has been chosen to represent France when the gods of cinema and the men behind the movies unite for the 83rd annual Academy Awards, French national film organization the CNC said on Friday.

The film, produced by Why Not Productions, Armada Films and France 3 Cinema, premiered at May's Festival de Cannes to stellar reviews and was released in Gallic theaters on Sept. 8th via Mars Distribution.

"Of Gods and Men" stars Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale in the fictionalized version of the true story of French Trappist monks in Algeria who were kidnapped and killed in 1996.

Members of a selection committee chosen by cultural minister Frederic Mitterand that includes Festival de Cannes topper Thierry Fremaux, French Cesar Academy president Alain Terzian, directors Costa-Gavras and Regis Wargnier, chairman of the CNC's Financial Aid, plus actors Philippe Pollet-Villard and Jeanne Moreau made the decision on Friday morning in Paris.

The 2011 Oscars ceremony will be held on Feb. 27th, 2011.
