Getting Lost With the New York Times' Matt Gross

Matt Gross is better known to travelers as the former Frugal Traveler for the New York Times, whose exploits took him around the world, burdened only with a light wallet, an open mind, and his quick wit. Now the award-winning writer is embarking on a new adventure for the Times, a new series called "Getting Lost," in which Gross (who has the uncanny directional sense of a human compass) seeks to immerse completely himself in a new land without prior research -- and with the intention of losing his bearings and then finding himself again. (First stop: Tangier, Morocco.) Recently, Gross collaborated with LIFE on a photo gallery about his philosophy about traveling the world and, yes, getting lost. Ready to embark on a journey?
