Microsoft has claimed that there is "no bigger game" series than Halo - as it predicts a wildly successful launch for Reach.
That presumably includes Call Of Duty, GTA, God Of War and FIFA. Oh, and that chubby little 25-year-old. A confident claim indeed.
The Xbox 360-exclusive Reach finally goes on sale at midnight tonight. Microsoft claimed in a statement today that 'not since the debut of Star Wars: Episode I have fans been so excited to revisit a beloved franchise'.
Bold words. But not as bold of those of corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios Phil Spencer. He said:
"When it comes to the size and scope of a franchise and especially the dedication of the fans, no game is bigger than Halo.
"With Halo: Reach, we're delivering on our promise to redefine blockbuster entertainment experiences and ultimately help make this year the biggest ever in Xbox history."
Midnight Halo Reach launches will be taking place at both GAME and HMV stores, as well as supermarkets and indie retailers.
Having played 50% of the campaign since Saturday its safe to say that the game is very very good. I am a halo fan who has been very much invested in the fiction over the years i.e the games and novels but i really cant see this breaking any sales records.
There seemed to be a lot more marketing and awareness for halo 3 in my opinion. Some of the lines these execs come out with astound me sometimes.
Microsoft claimed in a statement today that 'not since the debut of Star Wars: Episode I have fans been so excited to revisit a beloved franchise'.
...and then fans were utterly shattered by the sheer pile of excrement that ensued. The Phantom Menace that is, not Reach. Seriously, what Microsoft exec thought that was a decent comparison?
8 hours in single player?...I'm gonna say that it isn't the biggest game in the universe in any respect. It won't make more money then CoD:MW2. Multi-player, I doubt it's as big as World of Warcraft. So...like how exactly is it the biggest game in the universe...might have the biggest ego though
i have magic rocks i found out the back garden, they will make you fly.im only looking for 500 a rock.why would anyone lie about something they were trying too sell.will only sell to gold members on xbox live.because you guys know a good deal when you see it.
GTA is huge, no doubt. But it is constantly changing. Vice City, GTA4, San Andreas, all markedly different. Strong leads for sure. CoD has the same problem, without the leads. I have never felt truly invested in the characters. Mario... hugely successful, but to be honest he is an avatar, nothing more.People play Mario for the ingenious levels and big grin factor.
Halo however has recognisable characters, a rich and interesting consistant universe and mythology and is so 'complete' in terms of its structure and appeal that it has managed to branch out into other mediums successfully. It is the true embodiment of a gaming 'brand', certainly in modern terms.
Whether you like Halo or not, you cannot deny it's significance and influence on the FPS as we know it today. There are many big name games, all of which are big for different reasons but Halo... well it's Halo. Huge.
If he means "big" in terms of the richness of the world/history etc. of the game then I'd definitely say it's big, but probably not as big as the likes of Elder Scrolls, Fallout and World of Warcraft.
LMAO @ FlimFlam. You seriously think Halo is bigger than GTA, CoD, or Mario?? Pull your head out. Looks like they have another delusional loyalist on the line. I wondered what type of person believes this nonsense. Apparently I've found it.
Hmmm, if it is in terms of the universe and continual development of history, characters and a timeline etc then Gears of War will push it in my opinion, perhaps more so in the future what with 3 games (1 to come) a book series and a potential film. The books add significant credence and history to the games so much so i have been inclined to pick the games back up and found the experience of playing them again far richer.
Bigger isn't always better. Sure it will sell by the bucket load just like Halo 3 but its only the purists that like Halo these days about 50% of the copies of the Halo 3 that were "sold" were thrown in for free with the xbox360 (trust me I have 3 copies all unopened and a copied I played) I played it through once and didn't like it much online was too slow and floaty and the 11-12 year olds bickering wrecked it for me. Don't get me wrong I loved the first one but 2nd and 3rd just let me down so badly. I won't be buying Reach thats for sure. I'm holding out for Gears. I don't doubt Reach will be among if not the biggest sellers of the year but it wont be the supposed umpteen million that 3 "sold"

Congrats on totally missing the point chump.
READ NEXT TIME. Use the ol' mince pies son. What I said, was as a franchise Halo is bigger than those mentioned because it is imbued by certain characteristics that the others are not. As a GAME it is big of course, but so is Mario, so is GTA, so is CoD. But because it is so rich and deep in terms of universe, in terms of mythology, it is therefore able to cross over into other mediums successfully, which further enhance and deepen that universe. So, in terms of being the biggest game, taking into account all of the above, Halo is, in my opinion, the biggest.
Seriously man, you would have to be a little lacking not to see that, or at least understand the general gist, even if you don't totally agree. Incidentally I agree with Headcharge too, Gears is moving in a similar direction.
Sorry Microsoft but Sony are getting my cash as I bought Birth By Sleep over Halo. Why you ask? Because it's fun and not full of little kids online. Try harder to impress me.
Wow, this foe filter is working overtime in this thread.
Exactly! When blocking some of these t**ts, I saw their ages on their profiles - forgive 'em, they're all angry late teenies or 20, and struggling with a child's mind in an adult world!
Although a few who went on there are a bit older and should definitely know better!

Also, LOL at all the PS3 crowd in on this thread like a ferret up a trouser leg. You guys are funny. And stupid.
No, M$ are "funny and stupid". I'm no Sony fanboy, but what a stupid comment for a company to make. And someone said "everyone knows the characters in Halo". I doubt it. Ask someone who doesn't play games who Master Chief is and thet wouldn't have a clue. Mario on the other hand....
erm, top boffins like Steve hawking don't know how big the universe is, so i'm dam sure that Halo isn't, surly MS has the processing power at their disposal to work that out
Who cares what Microsoft say. They also believe everyone wants Kinect! If that's not proof their understanding of the games industry is matched only by a common garden worm, then what is. The Halo comparision with the Star Wars episode 1 is unfair on that movie. While it was utterly rubbish in so many ways, it was never as bad as any of the Halo games.
Jar Jar Binks is a character with more depth and personality than Master Chief! Ok, sarcasm aside, there isn't one design aspect of Halo that matches the weakest design elements of Star Wars episode 1.
And yet the "Reach - Believe" ad which lasts ca. 1 minute and 9 seconds, strikes me as superior to all of "Episode 1" and most of "Episode 2" in the "Star Wars" franchise.
I always said that Alan Wake would've done better on PS3 due to the slightly more imaginative predisposition of Sony and their fans - I still stand by this!
However, as the months roll on I start to wonder whether the PS3 might just be the best console platform for pretty much every and any title full stop...
(For example, I'm pretty sure they could get more than 8 hours gameplay on a BR disc!)
With Bungie embracing the PS3 now (along with Valve and many others) I can't help but wonder if the best solution would just be to release the next Halo game on PS3 and just force the Xbox owners to upgrade?
Won't happen, of course, but would be a better option for everyone. Especially, since Halo is the only reason many people keep their eggboxes...
There are loads of bigger games than Halo, which is just a generic sci-fi schooter series. A few examples - Metal Gear Solid, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Mario, Zelda, FIFA, PES, Crash Bandicoot even. It's typical MS s h i t talking.

This is without doubt one of the most pompous, self aggrandising comments I have ever witnessed on this forum.
Tell me, when you aren't masturbating over pictures of yourself or Kaz Hirai, do you ever step outside into the real world? You should try it some time, I honestly think you may benefit.
Incredible how many people have missed the point here. 'GTA says hi', firstly no it doesn't, don't be silly, and secondly, how many GTA books have you read of late? Comics? Animated shorts? None? But it's bigger than everything, how can that be? That's just an example, you could pick any game.
Halo has appeal beyond the normally limited comfines of a traditional video game. It isn't about the best game ever, copies sold, age of franchise. In terms of marketing, Microsoft have done a sterling job of making Halo a true phenomenon.
This doesn't mean I agree with Microsoft shouting it's mouth off, just like I find it tiresome when Sony do it. THEY ALL DO IT. That's video games these days, marketing, bluster, swagger. You cannot deny though, that completely irrespective of how it is put, they do have a point.

Pokemon kinda wipes Halo of the board for one, it has an anime with about 700 episodes, 13 films, 17 mangas and oh about 30 games. So no Halo isn't the biggest, not by a long shot.
@PS3_fannyboy - Totally agree with you. PS3 gamers are more sophisticated then shooting aliens while jumping in mid air like Jack@$$es. We have more class then that
`not since the debut of Star Wars: Episode I have fans been so excited to revisit a beloved franchise'.
get over yourself M$
lets see Return of the Jedi Came out in 1983.Episode 1 came out in 1999.So thats 16 years of anticipation for one of the biggest Sci Fi Franchises in HISTORY.The amount of spin offs from star wars in respect of games, books, fan fiction, merchandising etc etc makes Halo look like some small flash game on some obscure web site at the nether end of the internet.
Sure Halo has been successful in its way but what`s up with comparing it to Star Wars?
Anyway reading it another way imo Episode 1 was pretty bland affair and introduced us to one of the most gob smackingly horrid sci fi characters in the history of the world in the form of (uck,spit..) Jar Jar Binks
what is it with M$ and all these claims? surely after the over hyped, over long totally ludicrous Kinect Launch they really should think about looking up `hyperbole` in the dictionary...
hyperbole 1. an obvious and intentional exaggeration. 2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “She’s as big as a house.” Cf. litotes. — hyperbolic, adj.
oh..heh ..nm ...obviously they did and apparently superglued it in reverse writing to every member of the marketing departments head so its the first thing they see in the bathroom mirror..

Lol, tis somewhat ironic that the point which most offends you is actually one of the few serious assertions I have made on here...
As I explained in the Alan Wake thread, I firmly believe that Sony are more adventurous than MS - especially with exclusives. For example, look at Heavy Rain and LBP!
Also if you contrast the common stereotypes of American gamers loving the shooty shooty and vroom vroom against Jap gamers who like the survival horror genre...well, you can see where I'm coming from saying a survival horror game might've done better on a Japanese console.
