Five Favorite Films with Joe DanteAs Piranha 3-D chomps into theaters in all of its glorious B-movie gore, we caught up with the man behind the Roger Corman's decidedly more modest 1978 original -- director Joe Dante, then making his third feature film ahead of hits like The Howling, The Twilight Zone and, of course, 1984's horror-comedy classic, Gremlins. RT spoke to Dante recently in Melbourne, which was hosting a retrospective of his career, and asked him to name his all-time five favorite films. Though his picks are now regarded as classics, many weren't well-reviewed or even financially successful upon their first releases. “Psychologically, maybe it reflects my career,” Dante laughs. “No, I’m a firm believer that movies are not best appreciated at the time they’re released. They need to age a little, like wine, and people can’t really assess a movie until a couple of years have passed, at least.” 28 Comments |
Five Favorite Films with Tim Burton"I really wouldn't know a good movie if it bit me in the face -- up to a certain point," laughs Tim Burton, recalling his childhood movie watching experiences. We recently caught the filmmaker behind such iconic work as Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas as he unveiled his exhibition of art in Melbourne, Australia, where he revealed his all-time personal five favorite films. "These kinds of films, there was something that harkened back to when you read a weird kind of pulp or fairy or folk tale," he explains. "They've got kind of rough edges around them. There's something primal about them. A lot of these movies, for me, some of their flaws are actually their strengths. These are the kinds of films that if they're on, I'll watch them. Call it masochism, I don't know. They're a part of me." 163 Comments |
Greenberg's Greta Gerwig: America's Next "It Girl"?"One day I'll be a fallen 'It Girl'," says Greta Gerwig, discussing her recent rise from the American movie underground to the rapture of mainstream Hollywood critics. A key figure in cinema's so-called 'mumblecore' movement, Gerwig starred in such no-budget films as LOL, the Duplass brothers' Baghead, and Hannah Takes the Stairs (which she co-wrote), while co-writing and directing her own feature, Nights and Weekends. Following a part in last year's retro horror The House of the Devil, Gerwig broke on to the indie major scene with a lead role as young Los Angeles transient Florence, opposite Ben Stiller, in Noah Baumbach's Greenberg. She'll soon star alongside Russell Brand in the remake of Arthur, and is scheduled to appear in Ivan Reitman's forthcoming project. With Greenberg in Australian cinemas this week, we spoke to Greta about her newfound celebrity, working with Baumbach, and the curious reactions to the film's sex scenes. 68 Comments |
Five Favorite Films with Runaways Director Floria SigismondiFloria Sigismondi may not be a familiar name to movie audiences, but there's a good chance you've encountered her work. Over a 20-odd-year career, the Italian-born photographer turned director has made music clips for artists including David Bowie, The Cure, Bjork and The White Stripes, priming her for her debut feature this year, 'The Runaways'. Written and directed by Sigismondi, the film charts the combustible short life of influential '70s all-girl band The Runaways, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning rocking out of character in the lead roles of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. We spoke with the director recently and asked her to name her all-time five favorite films. 95 Comments |
Queen of Noise: Floria Sigismondi on The RunawaysShort-lived LA band The Runaways were in many ways ahead of their time: predating punk and the riot-grrrl movement that would later claim them as their own, the all-girl quintet, led by guitarist Joan Jett and singer Cherie Currie, dared to play their own instruments and cover sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll from a female perspective in a world dominated by stadium rock machismo. That they were seen by some critics as a manufactured jailbait stunt -- the band members were all underage -- seems almost beside the point in retrospect. This year's film 'The Runaways', written and directed by Floria Sigismondi from Currie's memoir 'Neon Angel' and Jett's recollections, explores the band's 1975 creation and turbulent not-quite-rise and fall at the hands of svengali producer Kim Fowley, while vividly capturing the bond between Currie (Dakota Fanning) and Jett (Kristen Stewart), two "dead end kids" clinging to each other in the media storm. With the movie opening in Australia this week, we spoke to Sigismondi about the film and just whose version of the controversial events it depicts. 66 Comments |
