IN COMES this Tamil girl, swinging in her soft, feathery features in Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naan. That was in the early 90s. A little more role-playing on camera, then the big news breaks - Suchitra Krishnamurthi marries one of the most eligible bachelors of Bollywood, the actor-director Shekhar Kapur. Overnight, she becomes the envy of many.
Then breezes in her solo music album, "Dole Dole". That was a few years ago. The video becomes as popular as her light and fluffy crooning. And the entertainment world spots a fresh side of Suchi. To make things fabulous, an impressed celebrity musician Andrew Lloyd Webber even composes a song for her.
But all this was some time ago. As she came into the frame like a puff of air, by and by, she left it too without much gush.
Now, Suchitra, mother of one, has returned to the loop. Fresh as ever. In a new avatar, though. As the host of an afternoon talk show, Hum Aur Tum on Zee TV. Fine-looking she has always been, and with those girlish looks and that big, broad, beguiling grin intact, this time Suchi chats up celebrity couples. If at times she giggles with them, at others she is caught telling the guests to reveal their bedroom secrets, "if at all you are comfortable with it."
Not that she was initially comfortable with her new role. "I never wanted to do something serious. I am not that type. So, till a day before the promos for the show were shot, I was not sure whether I wanted to do it. I actually refused them that day. But after putting down the phone, I thought about its format and said to myself, why not," says Suchitra. Produced by Applause Entertainment for Zee to be aired at 1 p.m. on Sundays, the 13-episode show is being sponsored by bharatmatrimony.com.
"To begin with, we are now interviewing two celebrity couples. I should say it is a very chatty and casual affair and yet relevant to everyone's lives," she continues. Busy mothering little Kaveri, being Mrs Kapur and learning stained glass painting - "Even my bathroom windows have stained glass now" - she indeed utilised her hiatus at her own pace. All set to take off again, she has many a project on hand.
"I am working with music director-composer Raju Singh at present for my second music album. It will be called Ur Le," she says, though adding with that trademark smile of hers, "I hope nobody steals the name of the album before it hits the market at the end of this year."
But what takes the cake is her re-entry into films after a break of almost a decade. "I will be coming in a Ramgopal Varma film opposite Anil Kapoor, most likely in early September," she reveals. Though very much willing to do playback or "even a background score" for the film, Suchitra says she could not succeed in convincing Ramu to use her for it.

All that is left to be seen is a joint project with Mr. Kapur. But the suggestion at once brings this reaction: "No way shall we be doing something together. I honestly believe if a couple, who are both professionals, end up doing anything together, they end up creating a mess." Rolling her eyes, Suchitra leaves no scope for any further query. You leave her to herself. The cute little girl has grown up indeed!
