Anjaan's claim to fame includes bar-tending, veejaying and black comedy
|
FROM BARTENDING on van bars on the roads of Bangkok to veejaying to being a stand-up comedian, he has done it all. "I wanted to be a pole dancer," he adds ruefully. A Seinfeld, Chris Tucker and Eddie Murphy buff, Anjaan loves what he is doing at the moment. "Black comedy," he explains. "There is a niche audience for such a genre in the country unlike the open mike concept that is popular overseas. It is difficult when you are doing a stand-up act in English. Shekhar Suman is a super success owing to his mass Hindi speaking audience who can understand the lines. I admire Javed Jaffrey as well. I think he has got great timing," he adds. Anjaan was in town recently for the Seagram's Fling do and the Con' Traditions fashion party at 10 Downing Street with sessions of impromptu situational comedy for revellers. "I don't follow a script as a rule. If you rehearse, I feel you lose the first-time-telling-the-joke charm," he explains.
What goes behind all the talkathalon is, "information reading. This is a knowledge-based job. What you know is what you speak. I don't read Ayn Rand but can lap up a How to Calculate Vedic Mathematics," he says. Yet another activity that keeps him going is theatre.
"I have worked with Mahesh Dattani on professional theatre. At the moment I am also part of a touring play Still Waters by Vijay Nair," he says.
A globetrotter, born in Palghat, educated in Kuwait and now jet-setting with his bag of yarns a global Indian is what he would like to call himself. "If you are not travelling, you are not living your life. I intend to include at least two Indian tourist destinations in my annual itinerary," he says.
Plans also include owning a tropical island. And professionally? "Six years ago I made a six year plan two years of foundation, two of networking and two of fame. Since it has hit the bull's eye--my fame quotient has increased, I guess the plans till 2006 would be making moolah," he quips.
