A real gift
JASSIE GIFT is euphoric, for his song Lajjavathiye... has become a hit.
No song has been such a craze with the people in recent times. Ever since the album became a success, offers to work on films have been pouring in. But the up-and-coming composer-singer is yet to accept the offers that have come his way.
Gift, who has composed and sung Lajjavathiye... , is busy working on his next album.
"I was really happy about the work I've done," he says. "But I had never imagined that it would be such a rage."
Gift, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, was actively involved in the western music scene in the city. He learned how to play the piano and later joined music bands such as `Moby Dick' and `Hell City'. The bands performed regularly at a few hotels in the city. Gift sings reggae besides playing the keyboard. Gift sings reggae because it "suits me best."
His debut album was `Soona Soona'. "Soon after the album was released, director Jayaraj asked me to compose songs for his film, `Bheebhatsa'," he says.
About composing the tune for the song Lajjavathiye... Gift says, "Jayaraj wanted the songs of `4 The People' to sound different. So, we tried fusion music. The lyrics penned by Kaithapram suited the tunes perfectly." The picturisation of the song too has contributed to its popularity, says Gift.
He likes to listen to old Malayalam songs, compositions by Ilaiyaraja, reggae and rock. He is an ardent fan of Freddie Mercury.
What is the best compliment Gift has received after his song became a hit?
"Jesudas sang two lines of my song, when he was asked about the trend in Malayalam films in an interview with the Sun TV. I was thrilled to bits," Jassie adds with a smile.
