Kochi's French connection

LIVING IN Kerala, do you wish to visit France? If so, all your French travel docuents have to be signed by Chevaliar C. C. Ramdoss to enable you take that romantic trip. Chevaliar Ramdoss is the honorary French consul, residing in Kochi; being conferred the distinguished title by the French President Françoise Mitterand.

" The Portuguese, Dutch and the British all had long associations with Kochi, but the French had a settlement at Mahe, about 220 kms from here, which they made their base. So there is really no French connection with old Cochin, unlike the other European nations. I was the only French national in British Cochin, in the good old days Earlier the main export to France was frog legs. They wanted to import live aquatic frogs but the Government of India banned it. As the honorary French consul, I have the authority from the French government to look after French interests here. In case a French tourist or ship or any related matter needs assistance, I have to look it up.

I started my career with C. J. Revel, a French man who came to Kerala to study tropical timbers, stayed back and started a companyAt the ripe age of 77, Kochi's French man remains busy. Good luck Monsieur!
