Painting is his passion
He had a passion for art right from his childhood and did not allow poverty coming in the way of pursuing his dream. Now despite all odds, he is determined to continue painting as a profession, come what may.
Meet Ravi .K, who has set up his small workshop at Visalakshinagar and hopes to carve a niche for himself at the national level some day.
Born in Mudigonda village in Khammam district, he spent a greater part of his childhood in the village, which was surrounded by lush green fields, where both men and women toiled for their livelihood.
His parents were illiterate and poor peasants. While in his 10th class, Ravi used to write banners and graffiti to supplement the family income.
He was doing B.Sc second year, when a doctor noticed his artistic talent in preparing banners. The doctor informed him that there were universities in the country, which were offering the Bachelor of Fine Arts and MFA courses. He discontinued B.Sc and took the BFA entrance conducted by Andhra and Jawaharlal Nehru Techonological Universities. He got the third rank in AU Common Entrance Test and joined the BFA course.
On taking the BFA degree, his teachers advised him to enroll at Santhiniketan for MFA course and also supported him financially. He qualified in the MFA (Painting) Advanced Diploma course in 1999.
Ravi's favourite themes are female forms and nature. "Young girls playing, taking rest under trees or embracing animals in the backdrop of the lush green hills in my native village are ever green in my memory and I often portray them in my work," he says.
He has staged five solo exhibitions and 17 group exhibitions in different parts of the country during the last six years besides participating in the `Rang' (colour) Contemporary Indian Paintings, group exhibition held in California this year. He also participated in four workshops.
The National Scholarship instituted by the Human Resource Development Ministry for 2000-02, the Kanoria Centre for Arts scholarship in 1999, Telugu University scholarship during 1998-99, Merit Award of the AU Department of Fine Arts (1998-99) and post-matric scholarship (1997) are some of his achievements.
Ravi's forthcoming group shows include the ones to be held at the Chitrangan Art Gallery, Hawa Mahal on Beach Road from September 22 to October 6 and at CIMA Art Gallery, Kolkata, and the Indian Habitat, New Delhi in October.
