Poignant lyrics
THE BOSS is back. With the E Street band, for the first time after 1984. The album: "The Rising", which is an outpouring of feelings following the September 11 incident that rocked America and the world.
Bruce Springsteen's first album with new contents in seven years, speaks of pain, hope and life in America after 9/11. He could have been tempted to do a dirge-like "Nebraska". Instead he chose to bring out a rousing rock n' roll one on the lines of "Born In The USA".
The 52-year old rock star is said to have spoken to many families of victims and survivors, and the lyrics reflect their thoughts and feelings. There is almost a plea for understanding and reconciliation rather than revenge and hatred that comes out in the songs.
If "Paradise" is written from a suicide bomber's point of view, "Worlds Apart" narrates a love story that transcends cultural barriers. The opening track "Lonesome Day" is moving, while "Empty Sky" talks about the place where the Twin Towers once stood.
Musically, "The Rising" does not break any new ground. In fact, there is a sense of deja vu as the songs unfold. But the album proves that the Boss still has the fire in him, and that music can still move one emotionally and reflect happenings in society.
A must-have for rock n' roll and Springsteen fans.
