Ambassador of Ukraine to the Russian Federation Volodymyr Yelchenko has said there is no state school in Russia with a program for teaching school subjects in the Ukrainian language.

"As of today, unfortunately, in Russia there is no state school with the program of teaching school subjects in the Ukrainian language. Frankly speaking, I consider it absolutely unbelievable that in Moscow, where the biggest number of ethnic Ukrainians live, over a quarter of million, there is no Ukrainian secondary school. I consider the correction of this situation as one of my top priority tasks," he said in an interview in the Izvestia in Ukraine newspaper published on Wednesday.

The diplomat said that at present nine secondary schools and one pedagogical college are operating in regions of Russia where the Ukrainian language is studied. Most of the children of Ukrainians, who would like to know native language, learn Ukrainian in study groups or Sunday schools that are operating at the initiative of the Ukrainian public unions.

The ambassador noted that the National Television Company of Ukraine is carrying out negotiations with the NTV-plus Russian TV Channel on its inclusion into the network of cable broadcasting and "in fact, only some technical issues still have to be settled."

According to Yelchenko, for the broadcasting of other Ukrainian TV channels in Russia those interested Ukrainian TV channels "should search for potential partners in Russia, agree with them, and conclude deals," as a relevant political decision has been already taken at the highest level.
