Stimulating memories 10:50 AM

Several photos included in this story As pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Floral Park, N.Y., Al Martin, 61, was beloved by his congregation. Known for his sense of humor, Martin served the parish for several decades. Six years ago, members of his congregation became concerned when he began forgetting parts of the Mass. His wife Linda noticed changes at home as well. Al was forgetting to pay bills and would lose his sense of direction. Initially Al and Linda thought it was just stress. Al’s parish was located near the World Trade Center and he served as a chaplain for one of the local fire departments that lost a member in the tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001. Al spent countless hours comforting them and was deeply affected by the tragedy. As his symptoms persisted, Al went through extensive cognitive testing and was eventually diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
