|San Francisco 49ers quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan looked quite relaxed this week after leading his team to the win at Seattle, beat writer Tom FitzGerald says in his weekly Niners podcast.
And that's even after O'Sullivan looked like a "human tackling dummy'' against the Seahawks pass rush, notes Sporting Green Editor Glenn Schwarz.
One highlight was that LB Patrick Wills got to show off his athletic ability on the key play of the game, an interception return for a touchdown.
But Tom says the Niners won despite a poor pass rush , and need to find one against John Kitna and the pass-happy Detroit Lions, the Niners next opponent.

|When Alex Smith was selected as the first overall pick of the 2005 draft, the San Francisco 49ers believed they had their quarterback of the future. But leading the news in this week's podcast is an injury to Smith that essentially ends his career with the Niners.
Niners beat reporter Tom FitzGerald reports that 49ers head coach Mike Nolan was terse and cool announcing that Smith was placed on injured reserve. Tom notes that by comparison, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren praised Smith and said he believed the young QB still had a future in the NFL.
Tom also tells Sporting Green Editor Glenn Schwarz about the "patches of promise'' showed by the 49ers offense in the season opening loss to Arizona and gives a scouting report on the injury riddled wide receiver corps of this week's opponent, Holmgren's Seahawks.

|Beat writer Tom FitzGerald and sports editor Glenn Schwarz kick off a fourth season of Chronicle Sporting Green podcasts on the San Francisco 49ers.
The biggest change from last season is the addition of renowned offensive coordinator in Mike Martz. But as Tom and Glenn discuss, it might take time for the Niners offense to get used to the Martz' complicated offensive schemes. Even QB J.T. O'Sullivan, who won the starting job over Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, has only limited experience in the Martz system in Detroit.
On defense, linebacker Patrick Willis, a Pro Bowl player in his rookie season, anchors the defense, which adds Justin Smith and Ahmad Brooks.
The Niners open the season Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at Candlestick Park and you can find more in The Sporting Green's NFL Preview section on Thursday.
