Kings of Leon said they were forced to abandon a concert in St. Louis because pigeons kept pooping on them from the rafters.

The band was just three songs into their set at St. Louis' Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Friday when they stopped playing. (Opening acts The Postelles and Canadian rockers The Stills had the wherewithal to play through the chaos, it should be noted.)

"We couldn't believe what The Postelles and The Stills looked like after their sets," KoL bassist Jared Followill said in an official statement released after the show cancellation. "We didn't want to cancel the show, so we went for it. We tried to play [but] it was ridiculous."

According to the statement, Jared got the worst of it, and as he told CNN following the incident: "I was hit by pigeons on each of the first three songs. ... We had 20 songs on the set list. By the end of the show, I would have been covered from head to toe."

When one of the poo-bombs got a little too close to the self-described "germophobe's" mouth, the band decided to pull the plug.

"On the third song, when he was hit in the cheek and some of it landed near his mouth, they couldn't deal any longer," Andy Mendelsohn, a rep for the band, said in an official statement. "It's not only disgusting -- it's a toxic health hazard. They really tried to hang in there."

According to the statement, the band was forewarned of the venue's pigeon problems, and KoL have apologized to disappointed fans, promising in their official statement that they will "come back as soon as we can."

Kings of Leon play Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre July 28. With luck, they'll be able to look up while playing there.
