When you are starting out in family history, the abundance of available records, and the huge task of tracing your ancestors through the centuries, may seem a little daunting. Although your research is personal, and your family's history unique, there are lots of resources and groups that can help you.

There are a great number of local family history societies that you can join. These societies, under the direction of the Federation of Family History Societies, undertake national projects, such as the creation of the National Burial Index (records from which are available on findmypast.co.uk). They also specialise in local research, and often hold libraries with useful resources for tracing ancestors in the area.

Visit the website of the Federation of Family History Societies to find out more, and to locate your nearest family history society.

The Society of Genealogists provides some fantastic resources for all family historians. These include an extensive collection of research material at its central London library, as well as its regular lectures and courses on all manner of topics surrounding genealogical research. Visit the Society of Genealogists' site , and view some of their records held by findmypast.co.uk.

There are also countless family history fairs throughout the year: whether you are living in London, England or London, Ontario, there's bound to be an event near you. The findmypast.co.uk team attends a number of UK events; these are a great opportunity to take advantage of offers, ask our experts for advice, and to meet the team.

These events can be a great way of meeting other family historians, sharing tips and techniques, and sharing your interesting discoveries. Keep up to date with the latest events and fairs by subscribing to our free newsletter.
