Avtsin signs three-year deal with Habs

posted by Kevin Mio at 11h51 EST on Jul 15

The Canadiens have signed Russian prospect Alexander Avtsin to a three-year contract.

The 19-year-old played in 30 games with the KHL's Moscow Dynamo last season and scored three goals and added six assists. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound right winger was selected 109th overall in the 2009 NHL entry draft by the Canadiens.

The team's release:

Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing
of forward Alexander Avtsin to a three-year contract (2010-11 to 2012-13). As per club policy, financial terms of
the agreement were not disclosed.
Avtsin, 19, played 30 games in 2009-10 with the KHL’s Moscow Dynamo. The 6’2’’, 188 lbs right winger
registered 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists), with 10 penalty minutes.
In 2008-09, Avtsin recorded 110 points (56 goals, 54 assists) in 76 regular season games with the Moscow
Dynamo-2 (Russia-3), while also serving 130 penalty minutes.
A native of Moscow, Avtsin was selected in the fourth round, 109th overall by the Canadiens at the 2009 NHL
Entry Draft.
Avtsin participated in the Canadiens’ development camp in July 2009 and this past camp in July 2010.

whole ...nother... level

Noticed earlier the conversation concerning Avstin playing in the Q or AHL if he doesn't make the Habs. Not sure if it was mentioned but he has been quite specific in stating that playing juniors had no interest to him as he could make money playing in the KHL.

The same situation applies to Engqvist as he has stated that he would make more playing Elite in Sweden then playing in the AHL if he doesn't make the Habs.

So there's $4.7m left on the cap with only Price left to sign? Any reason to leave some cap space?

SeriousFan09's picture

Team will still need to add another player from HAM that will range in a cap hit from 500-900k, plus they'd like some wiggle room for future trades or non-IR injuries that require Hamilton call-ups while there is no cap relief from a player going on IR.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

It all depends on who's on the opening day roster. capgeek.com is reporting $4.7M in cap space, and is counting the likes of Ellers, Boyd, and Darche on making the roster (all reasonable assumptions). But they only list 12 forwards, along with 2 D and Auld. That means along with Price, another two forwards will need to be added to round out the roster. I'm guessing that those two would be closer to $900k, as White and Pacioretty are likely suspects ... if not Avtsin himself.

So that leaves less than $3M to sign Price. He should get similar to the $2.2M cap figure he made previously, but now that Gauthier has all but told him he is the man, Price's agent will no doubt push for more. Trading Halak is one thing, but Gauthier should have at least signed some real competition for the starting job. Given that both Dan Ellis and Johan Hedberg signed for only $500k more than Auld, that should have been easy.

demigod's picture

I see..thanx.

Traf27's picture

A big talented russian player determined to make it in the NHL. This is definitely something to smile about. i see him playing in the AHL with maybe a few call-ups depending on injuries and how the team is performing. That said, patience has proved to be the way to go with Subban (see also: Detroit Red Wings). A strong year with the 'Dogs will do this kid wonders.

SeriousFan09's picture

Checking out Kukla's Korner, they referenced a link to a twit Leaf blogger called Mike Ulmer who posts at the official Leafs Site had this to say about Kovalchuk.

'Please, spare me the puppy drool about wanting to go to a winning team. Kovalchuk is speaking with the Los Angeles Kings and the New Jersey Devils. If lifestyle was the only consideration, he would go to LA. If access to championships were his goal, he would find himself in Jersey.'

Does this guy really believe that NJ is closer to a championship than the Kings? The Kings with their young roster and star players 25 and under, or the aging NJ Devils who are taking two steps back for every step forward they make towards the Cup. Kings will challenge for the Cup in the next two years, the Devils these days can't challenge for a 2nd-round playoff appearance.

Exit716's picture

Mike Ulmer? Didn't he get in a fight on a plane with a fellow journalist back when he worked for the Toranna Stun?

Ayan_SB's picture

Not surprised, since when do Leafs fans know anything about winning anyways?

I don't even think they're allowed to vote.

The Cat's picture

Who cares about the leafs and their fans anyways. Montreal-Toronto aint even that good of a rivalry anymore, 1960s was 50 years ago. Everyone can stop with the fake hatred. Boston-Montreal, Philly-MTL are better rivalries nowadays.

The Cat's picture

It is a funny thing about New Jersey. Every year before the start of the hockey season, a lot of people -myself included- have said that the team wont be as good as the last year, and yet, they always seem to be near the top.

andrewberkshire's picture

And by the playoffs they perform how everyone predicted they would in the first place.

Traf27's picture

It's simple Leaf fans logic. They just invert reality, automatically making them Cup favorites and a aging team supported by a aging goalie playing and out-dated system better than a young up and coming talented team eager to improve on a strong showing from last year.

The struggles of today will make the victories of tomorrow that much sweeter.

Toronto is an aging team? R U 4 real?

Mattyleg's picture

Here's a question for yez all:

What do you think is the stumbling-block for Price's contract-signing?

a) Money (he wants more)

b) Contract length (he wants longer)

c) CH Magagement holding on for one more move

---Hope Springs Eternal---

Shiloh's picture

None of the above. Try d) He and his agent have a hugely-inflated opinion of his skills that was nurtured and promoted by Bob Gainey for half a decade. They want many millions.

They have succeeded in driving out of town perhaps the best young goalie in the league. They have cowed management so much that the backup is now a third, rather than second-stringer. They think they have all the marbles - and they want big cash. Of course, we'll cave and overpay the big baby.

RJ's picture

Well said. We will overpay for Price based on his "upside".

"My face is my mask," Gump Worsley

The Cat's picture

Safe to say Gainey didnt go to the George Steinbrenner (RIP) school of contract negociations.

What's that hand out the longest and largest contracts in history?

Of note, the Yankees have given 4 of the top 6 highest contracts in MLB history.

Bill J's picture

Not sure of your intended message, when George signed $20 Million (PER SEASON) contracts!

Cough Cough - NO CAP!

SeriousFan09's picture

Steinbrenner also had the biggest payroll in the MLB for a long time, helps when you can afford to retain all your star players without worrying about things like a salary cap.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Also has the biggest market and richest fans AND no salary cap!

But good posts about Avstin were deleted, which may come as a suprise to somebody with your negative view.

What else 'seems' to be above my head? Never mind.

I just get a bit tired of silly things like personal grudges or personality cults getting into forums.

So far, it's the best montage I've seen. Got the chills a few times. And reminded myself why I had a man-crush on Cammy for 2 months..

People choosing Sourray over Markov????

Listen buddy, I don't wanna argue with you or have to smash my PC screen here at work. If you choose Sourray for certain reasons, fine; everyone's entitled to their own opinion. It's cool...

But I do have to say that Cammy did something incredible this spring. I've loved this team for over 20 years now, and never has one single player ever made me more proud to wear a Habs jersey. He electrified the Bell Center, and scored such key goals at a clutch rate that nobody's seen in quite some time. Add that to the fact that he came back from a major knee injury and is 5 foot 7 inches tall.

I'm not one to jump on a players bandwagon. When we signed him, I was happy but didn't buy a t-shirt or anything. I found it kinda cliche, and a little too mainstream for me; that's why I never had a Kovalev jersey. I like the guys that fewer people wear like Moen, Pleks, Gomez and Markov. But when I saw what this Cammy guy did against such heavily favoured apponents, I realized this guy was a big time player. Not only did he score all of those goals, he wanted to be the guy every single night scoring those goals. Nobody in the past 20 years has wanted to be that guy; he does it with a smile.

Cammy's become my favorite Hab for that sole reason.

Kinda hope we'd had him a few years back. But as long as he stays here for the rest of his career, and plays at a level we know he can, he'll be one of those old timers walking down the red carpet at future Habs ceremonies.

Curtoph's picture

Lol, The Cat springs the most comments with his Markov comment. Good show.

Ben Maxwell just slipped another notch down the depth chart. He has one year to prove himself in the minors before being released at the end of his contract.

As for Avtsin, he's young, big, and extremely talented. The accomodations in the A will be better than what he is used to in Russia and all he needs is an english tutor and he's off to the races.

Habs could call him up late season to test his skills in the NHL.

Things are looking good as we replace the smurfs with real hockey players.

You are right on, hopefully the smurf experiment is over. Our tiny tots in the AHL should be moved if possible.

andrewberkshire's picture

Maxwell is a center and Avtsin is a RW so he hasn't slipped any further down the depth chart. However I've pretty much given up on Maxwell reaching his potential, he's just too soft.

It's a shame Maxwell's game has turned so timid, he has the skills to play in the NHL. Given the make-up of the current roster and how it projects over the next two years, I'd say there is 98% chance Maxwell is traded before next summer.

If Maxwell ever adds some edgy in his game, I could see him being a fine 2/3 line center.

Agree however think he will be gone sooner if he doesn't have a great camp. See  a prospect for prospect thing. We are weak in depth defensemen for this year so far.

It is a shame but he's played like a pussy and we don't need that, time to move on.

andrewberkshire's picture

It's definitely too bad, but not every prospect can pan out. For every Subban there are 3 or 4 Ben Maxwells.

Exit716's picture

Correction. For every Subban there are 30 or 40 Corey Urquharts, Kyle Chipchuras and David Fischers.

24 Cups's picture

And Alexander Avtsins?

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

andrewberkshire's picture

Are you saying 1/30 2nd rounders pans out for this org? That's quite a bit of hyperbole.

mike g's picture

He looked really intimidated and uncomfortable playing in the NHL last year...

Even in the playoffs, he wasn't able to secure a 4th line role given to him because Sergei was MIA. Maxwell was invisible and looked very scared.

Compare him and his NHL opportunity to that of Tom Pyatt, and you know exactly which one to dress..

andrewberkshire's picture

Same way I feel. Too timid, doesn't have confidence. And with Martin in charge, if you don't have confidence and make very few mistakes, you'll never crack the lineup.

Pretty nice post that I found on TSN.ca's comment section...

"Subban, Avtsin, Eller, Kristo, LaBlanc, Tinordi, Weber, Pacioretty, Palushaj, Schultz...Habs are really stockpiling some great young talent...with their core already signed to long-term contracts (Cammalleri, Gomez, Gionta and Plekanec), the Habs will have approx $23M to re-sign Markov and Gorges, and then add some firepower to their roster...the future is very, very bright in Montreal...even brighter if Price finds himself. Good post.

Reading that I feel good about the Halak trade.  I didn't want to lose him but Gauthier did somethign that I've complained the Habs don't do enough of which is get VALUE for leaving players.  If only Gainey had traded a few players as rentals instead of letting half the team walk just IMAGINE what we'd have in the pipeline.  It could be insanely good!  Habs need to make more sacrifices to build and fewer sacrifices to make money by scraping into the playoffs for a round with a mediocre team.
