About
I grew up in Park Extension, within walking distance of Dickie Moore's Dairy Queen on Jean Talon. Moore had a place on L'Acadie Blvd., and we used to see him driving around in his convertible with a Samoyed and a very dishy wife.
While "studying" at McGill University during the 1960s, I used to attend games at the old Montreal Forum. My fellow undergraduate reprobates and I would scramble up the stairs to get centre-ice spots in the top standing room section, where aged ushers didn't know or care what we were smoking.
I stood out in the cold for six hours to get tickets to the 1975 New Year's Eve game between the Canadiens and Central Red Army. With the exception of the birth of my daughter, the 3-3 tie was the greatest event I've ever seen in my life.
The Canada-U.S. Gold medal game comes close .... but I wasn't there.
I've been a professional journalist since 1974, when I joined the Montreal Star sports department. I've covered the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1979 Expos, pop music and MSO tours of Europe and Asia (classical musicians are WAY more fun to drink with than athletes). I wrote a TV & Radio column for 20 years and, since 2000, have written a City column for The Gazette.
The best part of being a Habs Inside/Out contributor is attending games at the Bell Centre. I think it's a great building: noisy, raucous and packed to the rafters with Montrealers and visitors who live for hockey.
And I still get goosebumps every time Michel Lacroix booms out "Accueillons nos Canadiens ..."
Having seen the Boston Red Sox win two World Series and the Pittsburgh Steelers add a couple Super Bowl titles, I suppose I can die happy ... but not before another Stanley Cup parade. And I'd really like my daughter to see a historic New Year's Eve game.
I like all the players. Covering baseball gives me a profound appreciation of pro athletes who aren't jerks.
My weltanschauung was summarized by the late great Bill Hicks when he said "all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."
Have a nice day.

Question: Who has the bigest man-crush on Pierre McGuire?
A. Mitch Melnick
B. Mike Boone
C. Ed Lopaz
Would it be a pleasant surprise is the Habs where a secret team in on Kovy2 ?
Not tired of ineffective players? I watched him be a 1 man show in NJ at the end of the season and playoffs. He threw everyone on at the same time he was off. Just like a certain Kovy we used to have.
Read my post again, it was a question... Not a "I hope he comes here"
Your answer is clear... lol
That'd be awesome. And they are known for keepingthings quiet. Look at Dustin Boyd. Habs management announced his signing before any journalist could get hold of it. He'd be great for MTL. MTL would be great for him. (My guess is the Kings will sign him, though).
No more vuvus! Yayyyyyy!
And now the world's most boring sport can be mothballed for a little while.
Here you go g-man, so you can relive the world cup right here at HIO

Golf and baseball are being stopped?
Nowhere near as popular as this "turf diving" they call a sport.
At least it wasn't settled by penalty kicks.
Unrelated to the soccer game.
Glad you changed your mind about quitting this place :)
Me too.
For those who own a new iTouch or iPhone with ios4. Here are some NHL wallpapers including Montreal. Woohoo!

"And I am really looking forward to watching Michael Cammalleri in the NHL. He had an awesome year in the AHL." PIERRE McGUIRE
That's a great thing to keep in mind. As they say, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
Uninspiring first half of Cup final. A disappointment for fans.
That's the Canoe.ca headline now. It pretty much explains every soccer game, doesn't it?
The Dutch may have pissed away their one good chance.
Mr. Boone,
There are quite a few disparaging remarks about Pierre Mcguire on this thread.
I have tried, over and over again, to explain to the posters who Pierre Mcguire is, to no avail.
I can not attend the Summit.
But I'm asking you to take a few minutes to defend your "mentor", as I believe you refer to Mcguire.
It serves no purpose for me to argue, since I have no personal knowledge about the man.
You do.
I will leave this in your capable hands, and if you choose to follow up, then that would be great.
The posters on this site respect you, and certainly you are in a position to discuss Mcguire's character
and credibility, how much he knows about hockey, the NHL, and hockey players worldwide.
Thanks.
Would you like some cheese with that Whine? So since you can't convince us that Mcguire is god, you go crying to the teacher? Come on, man. Mcguire can't stand on his own merit, and nothing you say will change that.
Mike Boone is in a position to discuss such issues, doesn't mean he can change my mind about the guy. Mcguire compared the Leafs Defence to the legendary Big Three to start the season, not one of them is fit to tie Larry Robinson's skates, tape Guy Lapointe's stick or hand Serge Savard his gloves. He talked about Gilbert Brule being a better choice than Carey Price for years. He has said Mike Komisarek made Andrei Markov look good, think about that for a moment. He said Toronto would be the most improved team in the Eastern Conference, despite their unreliable goaltending and lack of reliable forwards.
He also becomes an absolutely shameless publicist for anyone who has a half-decent WJC series if they're born in NA. I can't respect a guy who acts like a clown on TV and snipes with hindsight at the Canadiens on the radio. Ill-deserved arrogance is not something I respect. He's accomplished nothing except keeping a job on a rather unimpressive sports television station in the last 15 years that is All Leafs, All the Time. He won Cups because he was serving under Bob Johnson and Scotty Bowman on a mini-dynasty team featuring two of the Top 10 scorers in NHL History in their prime, one of them being the best hockey player ever.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Mike Boone is in a position to discuss such issues
good; that's a start.
So it should end with me ignoring terrible analysis and a lack of integrity? It's a little early in the day for drinking I'd say, that and I don't drink.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Pierre McGuire's alright, he can get on people's nerves with his yammering on about crap but he DOES KNOW his hockey, he just needs to tone it all down. He's perceived as anti-Hab when apparently he's a huge Habs fan but doesn't want to seem so on-air.
McGuire's way better on radio than he is on TV.
Disparaging remarks? Maguire reaps what he sows. When he says things like Komisarek, Kaberle and Beachemin are as good of a big 3 as Savard, Lapointe and Robinson he should be mocked mercilessly for the rest of his life.
I'm with you, andrew..McGuire is nothing but a blow hard/"I told you so", type..
What he fails to mention is that, how would Carey Price become "great" if he never gets the playing time..
The way I look at it is, we dealt Halak, which will be a step back, but we gained a Price, Eller, and Schultz..How does Price become better by nailing his arse to the bench?
He likes to twist things to better support his arguement and give nothing but opinions..Philly got the word out on Jaro..Get traffic in front of him and shoot high..After all, he is a smaller in stature goaltender..
Name 1 small goalie that has ever had a HOF career? Sure, they may get hot, but the bigger goalie ALWAYS has the better career..Teams can't adjust to goalies that are big, they can adjust to smaller ones...
EVERY goalie has trouble with traffic in front of them. That's the "book" on all good goalies. Shooting high while the goalie is screened works on EVERY goalie. Deflections work, too. And cashing in rebounds.
And for such a tall guy, why does Price look so freaking small? Maybe it's because he's on his knees early begging the puck to hit him.
Being in the butterfly works to the advantage of a goalie with a long torso. When Price is in his butterfly his shoulders almost come up to the crossbar, which means that all of his body mass is available withing the 6 x 4 net to block shots while effectively using his pads to cover the bottom part of the net. He actually covers more of the net by going down "early". It's the same with most tall goalies.
He goes down early and watches the puck float in just like a butterfly.
To name a few goalies who were not too bad:
1. Terry Sawchuk - 5'11"
2. Gump Worsley - 5'7"
3. Tony Esposito - 5' 11"
4. Dominek Hasek - 5' 11"
"And I am really looking forward to watching Michael Cammalleri in the NHL. He had an awesome year in the AHL." PIERRE McGUIRE
I think Price will surprise people this season, Maguire however won't. He'll keep slobbering over every move Burke makes.
Long time reader, first time poster. Figured that it was about time that I start getting in shape for the upcoming season.
For getting in shape, get familiar with your draft years, draft orders, the farm team in Hamilton, NHL.com for stats and drill every day with at least twenty-five posts, whether you like it or not.
Seriously though, welcome to the party.

Not to worry; I've been doing my homework. Aside from everything that you've suggested, I've also drawn up an H/IO "*** list".
LMAO you will fit right in! :)
Robben robbed!
"Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!"
How is THAT not a red card?
That was an awful call!
The Oranje need to crank it up here- but not by doing karate on the Spaniards.
TSN and Bob McKenzies analysis of Top 30 in 2005 draft:
http://www.motownsports.com/forums/detroit-red-wings/29686-tsns-top-30-p...
Sorry I searched all over Google for what Pierre McGuire might have said but no luck.
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
Pierre McGuire on TSN right after Montreal picked Price "This is right off the reservation" That alone shows me what this guy is about.
latendresse the 21st best rated...le wow!
I don't recognize too many names. Looks like we did well afterall.
The wings fans in the comments wanting to select Gui is funny.
I went back and looked that is funny!
You should have just youtubed it. Here it is.
McKenzie said what Maguire claimed to have said, and he conveniently left out the mention of Gilbert Brule, which is who Maguire raved for months that the Canadiens should have taken.
There's also the beauty comment by Maguire that picking First Nations Carey Price two picks higher than his projection was "going off the reservation". What a scumbag that you admire so much.
In case you didn't know... At the 2005 NHL entry draft, McGuire got into a minor controversy for alleged racist remarks. When the Montreal Canadiens selected goaltender Carey Price 5th overall, to the surprise of most people, McGuire claimed "that's right off the reservation". McGuire later explained that it was a little known saying similar to "out of left field", meaning no one expected it. However, it was soon noted that Price was part Canadian Indian, leading some to accuse McGuire of using "right off the reservation" as a way to make fun of Price's background.
"And I am really looking forward to watching Michael Cammalleri in the NHL. He had an awesome year in the AHL." PIERRE McGUIRE
Thanks Pierre for clearing things up about what you said in the 2005 draft.
Don't you go bringing facts into this argument.
I suppose my endeavors to find exact quotes from Pierre McGuire in 2005 is avoiding the facts? I am all for the facts.
Perhaps you can direct me to the facts?
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
Your about facts.... ROFLMAO
If you say you can't find them, then why would I waste my time looking? but if you weren't old enough to remember, then maybe you should just accept that what Mcguire says he said is not truth.
The "reservation" comment is truly shocking.
TSN were unanimous in dissing the selection and said it did not address the needs of the Montreal Canadiens. They said a big centre or a big defenseman should have been taken instead.
It was also interesting the mention of concerns about attitude problems with Carey Price.
It would be safe to say had Pierre been the GM the selection of Price would not have happened. Brule was mentioned as were Staal and Kopitar. Any thoughts on who exactly Pierre would have taken is pure speculation.
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
Uhm Yes they did!
I suppose you where not following this team too closely 5 years ago ?
Actually, there's no speculation at all. Maguire said practically every day that he would have taken Brule with that pick.
As for the TSN panel, they also said the goaltending in Montreal was set with Huet, Theodore and Danis. None of those guys are NHL starters right now, so obviously the Canadiens organization knows something he didn't.
And neither was Price after 3 tries!
Based on this - a Habs fan since this year ?
I have only the YouTube video to go on. I have tried to find exactly what McGuire's thoughts on the 2005 draft were but have not been successful.
I was 12 at the time as someone else mentioned so I have no personal memories to go on.
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
So you are 17 and you don't even remember Habs last cup but you are an expert?
It's going to be hard for you to find many quotes of his on anything, considering he's exclusively on TV and radio, not in print.
So why are you arguing the point? Those of us who do have personal memories to go on DO remember what Mcguire said, and it wasn't what he now proffesses to have said. He's a revisionist liar, regardless of how well some speak of him now.
Gilbert Brule is 5'10" so he's not a big center and to this date, he's not been much of anything for two organizations now and he would've just as easily busted here. Mentioning him as an alternative is a joke. If Mcguire was GM, the team wouldn't know what the playoffs were either.

Woulda said Holland. Now, I don't know. So I'm wearin white today. This way, I might not be right, but I sure as heck won't be wrong. And that's all that matters, not being wrong.
Let's get it on.

Soccer world cup is of no interest to me now that the Rugby Tri-Nations event started yesterday with New Zealand destroying South Africa 32-12 in the opening match, giving everyone a peak of how the 2011 Rugby World Cup is going to go next year.
Mitch= Hi Pierre, are you ready to do the show? What would you like to talk about?
Pierre= Sure Mitch, why don't you aske me if Tampa has contacted me about being their GM and I'll answer "No comment", so it will look like I am in the running and perhaps get me a job as a GM one day in the NHL.
Mitch= Great idea, love you Pierre.
Pierre= Love you too, Mitch!
mcguire was actually interviewed for the tampa GM job.
Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, because he's a complete hack.
I could be wrong but NHL teams don't waste time on "hacks" when interviewing for a GM. Anyone who is deemed qualified enough to warrant an interview is hardly a "hack".
ps that does not include Montreal who do not even bother to interview candidates..."hacks" or any other kind
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
So Mike Milbury was never employed? What about Glenn Sather?
On this site, TX, quoting Brian Burke greatly diminishes your credibility, especially with the fine job he's doin in Toranna. Shouldn't do so much of it, if I were you.
Him not wanting Auld probably means the guy's gonna win the Vezina this year.

Bugs, it is wise to make judgements about what a person has to say not on the outside appearance.
My signature has little to do with the validity of any comment I might make. What am I to take from your signature?
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
Especially when the reason Alex Auld was traded was to make room for DAN CLOUTIER!!!!!!
your timeline is wrong. Auld was traded FOR Luongo. As far as goalies in the Habs system with embarrassing backstories go, it was Sanford who lost his backup job to Andrew Raycroft.
Actually, your timeline is wrong, because Brian Burke wasn't the GM of Vancouver when the Luongo trade went down, so why the hell would he be commenting on Alex Auld. That quote was made before the lockout, before Brian Burke was fired by the Canucks. Auld was a hotshot kid who many fans in Vancouver thought would take Cloutier's job, but Burke had a hard on for Cloutier and that's why he made the statement.
Auld wasn't traded by Vancouver until Cloutier was on the Kings.
Auld was traded in the same offseason that Cloutier signed with the Kings. Brian Burke had already been fired by the Canucks at that time. Dave Nonis was the GM of the Canucks and Burke was GM of Anaheim.
LOL!
Lawton, Sather in the 2000s, Milbury, Sutter, Lowe, GMs blowing a yearly Top 10 in CLB, Leafs management for forty years anyone? If PG is a hack as well, how did he have two GM positions before this and now have a 3rd? Minnesota Wild as well.
Plenty of hack GMs have been hired and fired around the league.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
My argument was the no person even gets a sniff at a top executive job without first having substantial qualifications. Major companies of which an NHL team certainly is don't wast time on posers.
What happens after the interview and who is hired is another matter entirely. No interview process is infallible nor is the election process for that matter. See our own PM.
I never said that PG was a hack and if that was implied it was not on purpose. I take issue with the fact a major business did not do due diligence when seeking a new top executive. That is just bad business. PG might have been their first choice but it is smart to interview all candidates anyway, if only to pick their brains.
"There is no way Alex Auld was going to be on this team this year, unless he flew to France during the summer and bathed in the holy waters at Lourdes." BRIAN BURKE
Actually, you just cited the Peter Principle and called the Canadiens management group a prime example. You directly called PG incompetent.
So this quote; "I never said that PG was a hack and if that was implied it was not on purpose" Is utter BS, and you're painting yourself into a corner as always. Perhaps you admire Maguire so much because you both operate in similar manners.
