Digital Switchover

Starting in 2008 and ending around 2012, TV services in the UK are switching over from older analogue to become digital, region by region.

If you currently receive no more than five of the traditional channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, C4 and five) on any of your TV sets, you'll need to think about your options for getting digital TV. Every TV set you want to keep watching in your home will need to be upgraded to digital, usually through the addition of a digital box.

If you are thinking about replacing TV equipment, you should discuss your options with a retailer or supplier.

Going digital can be simple and inexpensive. There are four options: through your aerial; digital cable; digital satellite; or your phone line. With some services you pay only the equipment cost, while others involve a monthly subscription charge.

You will still be able to use your video recorder but you'll need a digital recorder or additional digital box to be able to watch one programme while recording another.

All the UK will be digital by the end of 2012. The timetable, which may be subject to change, is as follows:
2008 Border
2009 West Country, Wales, Granada
2010 West, Scottish TV
2011 Central, Yorkshire, Anglia
2012 Meridian, London, Tyne Tees, Ulster.

For further details about digital switchover, you can:

  • Go to Digital UK's "get set for digital" website at digitaluk.co.uk - this has additional help including such features as a postcode checker, which you can use to find out whether you can get digital TV broadcasts.
  • Call Digital UK's information line on 08456 50 50 50.
