Nearly six months after Haiti's 7.0-magnitude earthquake, life goes on in downtown Port-au-Prince despite the rubble, wreckage, and loss. In the early morning hours, a vendor walks through the streets selling shopping bags.
Everywhere in Port-au-Prince, people line the streets with baskets and mats, selling fruit, brooms, used shoes, and cell phone chargers. The markets are active and abundant even amid the rubble downtown, the city's hardest hit area.
Job-seekers wait to submit their applications for an opening at a nearby bank. Very little rubble has actually been removed from Port-au-Prince, and the bustle of life goes on around it. The United Nations Development Programme estimates more than 20 million cubic meters of debris resulted from the earthquake.
At the Place du Marron Inconnu in downtown Port-au-Prince, a woman describes her anger at the government for ending food aid to the camps. Behind her is the bronze statue Le Marron Inconnu (which loosely translates to "The Unknown Slave"), a kneeling slave blowing the conch of freedom by Haitian architect and sculptor Albert Mangones.
Thousands of families, like the one in living in this tent, are crowded into the public squares in the Champs de Mars area of downtown Port-au-Prince, where the National Palace still lies in ruin.
People are incredibly resourceful, using whatever is available around them to improve life in the camps. Here at a camp named La Piste (Old Tarmac) in Port-au-Prince, about6,000 families live in mostly makeshift tents, a youth carries pieces of concrete to anchor his family's shelter.
In La Piste camp, children play with cards. Some schools have resumed in Port-au-Prince, but many children still are not in school. Even before the earthquake, only about half of Haiti's children attended school. In the meantime, the U.N. and several international aid organizations have established safe areas in camps where kids can play and do activities together.
