Aquaculture in the Classroom
MIT Sea Grant
Description:
Set up a recirculating aquaculture system in your classroom and raise marine finfish from eggs to adult. MIT Sea Grant developed a curriculum based on the aquaculture protocols used at its Marine Finfish Hatchery to raise marine finfish from eggs in an enclosed aquaculture system. The curriculum explains how to build the system, hatch the eggs, raise zooplankton and brine shrimp to feed the larvae, monitor your system's water quality, and wean the fish onto a commercially available pellet diet. This system can be used as the focal point of an aquaculture class, or as a tool to enhance topics taught in other classes. The curriculum includes activities that focus on aquaculture and how to maintain your recirculating system. This system is a great tool for teaching students about ecosystems, nitrogen cycle, and the environmental impact of aquaculture and commercial fishing.
