The Chronicle 2007
Readers are passionate about burgers. When I wrote about Marlowe's burgers last week, I received more than 500 comments, including many people suggesting their favorite burger places. Two days later, when I talked about my burger quest more than 20 years ago, more than 150 people added comments. No wonder hamburgers are showing up on menus at just about every restaurant in the Bay Area. Given Thomas Keller's love for them, I wonder when French Laundry will add one to the menu.
We culled through all the suggestions from the first post to come up with a very unscientific list of people's favorite places. More than 150 places were mentioned but only seven got more than 10 supporters. I'm beginning to work through my own list, and of course, all of these will be on it.
1. In-N-Out Burger (which I mentioned in the article in today's Chronicle about the food staff's favorite dishes.
2. Bill's Place in San Francisco
3. Joe's Cable Car in San Francsico (tie with Bill's)
4. Bullshead (on Ulloa) in San Francisco
5. Barney's in San Francisco
6. Spruce in San Francisco
7. Val's in Hayward
