ALAMEDA POINT FLEA MARKET

Sunday, June 6, 2010

Click on the link to the site for times, admission, location, etc.

Alternate ways to get to the Alameda Point Flea Market

For those who don't drive or don't have a car, there are alternative ways to get to the flea market. I did some digging (and calling) and found that there is ferry service that goes to within walking distance of the flea market's parking lot. Once you arrive at the Alameda ferry terminal head west for about 1/4 mile. You can then wait for the free parking lot shuttle service to take you to the entrance, or walk through the lot which is huge (3/4 of a mile to the gate).

Here is a link to the ferry's website. Check for the site for times and fares.

If you decide to go by BART, go to the downtown Oakland Station, and catch an AC Transit number 63 bus. Here's a link for AC Transit information.

Expose yourself - Mystery Mister in San Francisco's upper Haight

One evening I went to the Haight for dinner. On the way to the restaurant, I passed by a new antiques store, Mystery Mister. It was after hours, so I could only peek inside. I was intrigued by some of the things that I saw, such as a box of old photos, advertising items, religious antiques, old books, vintage clothing and a huge Carter the Great poster. I made a mental note to return, which I did days later.

I introduced myself to the owners, Graciela and Rochelle, and told them about my blog, Collective Mind. They're warm, friendly, helpful, and passionate about the business of all things vintage. I purchased an old children's book that featured teddy bears on that visit. Their taste is very eclectic, so there's a wide range of appeal. The items are beautifully displayed. It's nice to see a new vintage shop open in upper Haight. The numbers seemed to wane over the years, as shoe stores and paraphernalia shops seemed to proliferate.

They have both been prominent members of San Francisco's vintage community. Graciela used to own Guys and Dolls, The Leopard Room and Vendema while Rochelle managed La Rosa Vintage for 6 years before becoming the vice president of Retro City Fashions. I asked them to describe what they're after with their new store in an email, they responded "It's a mix of vintage clothing, antiques and oddities."

(Check them out on Facebook)

A prominent item in the store is a huge magician poster featuring Carter the Great, who was a resident of San Francisco. Rochelle and Graciela provided some of the background on Carter the Great. You can read some of the history here:

About the poster:
Carter the Great poster stats:
Poster size: 80" x 100"
Circa: 1920's
Title: The Card Trick
Price: $650

Carter the Great (Charles Joseph Carter 1874-1936): This rare poster is full of detail and color. Large posters from the 20's were printed in multiple panels because of printing limitations of the time. This poster has been printed in 4 separate sheets. This is a guaranteed original vintage advertising poster. Although mass produced at the time of printing most remaining posters are scarce in numbers making them valuable and rare. CONDITION: Needs restoration.

Carter the Great's Bio:

Charles Joseph Carter (June 14, 1874 - February 13, 1936) was an American stage magician, also known as "Carter the Great." A native of San Francisco, California, Carter began his career as a journalist and lawyer. Carter's home in San Francisco was rented by the Sumitomo Bank of California in the 1980's-90's and used as a residence for the Bank's President. Carter used to put on shows in the basement and you can still see occult references in the stained glass windows.

The house is in the Seacliff District of San Francisco near the Pacific Ocean. It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the "Houdini Mansion". It is now used as a foreign consulate. Following Charles Carter's death from a heart attack in 1936, his son Larry Carter took over as Carter the Great.

Bay Area Flea Markets and Swap Meets

Alameda:

ALAMEDA POINT FLEA MARKET

Sunday, May 5, 2010
Click on the link to the site for times, admission, location, etc.
