Ads on our license plates?

When it comes to advertising, no space is too small (fruit sticker), too bizarre (flyvertising), or too gross (urinal ads).

But what about ads on your license plate? It's a possibility California lawmakers are entertaining as they try to come up with ways to raise revenue in our cash-starved state. SB 1453 passed by the state Senate and now before the Assembly directs the Dept. of Motor Vehicles to research a plan to turn your rear license plate into an electronic billboard. [Tip to CBS5]

With technology developed by the Bay Area-based Smart Plate, ads or images bought by companies or consumers would replace the plate number whenever the car idles for at least four seconds. The number wouldn't disappear entirely -- it would remain in the corner of the plate, said Sen. Curren Price, D-Inglewood, who introduced the measure.

Of course these plates bring up safety issues and whether that McDonald's ad or Cal Golden Bear would distract drivers and lead to accidents.

What do you think? Are electronic license plates a good idea?
