The Asian Games are also referred to as Asiad. This multi-sport event is held every four years in Asia allowing athletes from all over the Asian continent to compete. The games are organised and regulated by the OCA under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Following a tradition which started in 1951 gold silver and bronze medals are awarded for first, second and third place in each event and national flags and anthems of the champions are present at the medal ceremonies. Athletes are entered into the competition through the OCA’s member National Olympic Committees to represent their country.

Normally only recognised nations are represented, but a few non-sovereign countries are allowed to take part due to exceptional circumstances for example Taiwan competes as Chinese Taipei, due to the political status of Taiwan.
