There's an urban, Tribeca feel to Oakland's Uptown district, with Flora anchoring a neighborhood revival that includes the refurbished Fox Theater and continuing condo construction. Owners Thomas Schnetz and Dona Savitsky offer American-inspired selections that include familiar dishes like pot pie and more unusual items such as vegetarian stew with dumplings, mushrooms and arikara beans. The interior has an "Art Deco meets classic bar-and-grill" look. Bartenders enhance the vibe by wearing white shirts and black suspenders, and shake up serious cocktails.

Specialties: Grilled New York strip with house-made Worcestershire sauce; salted caramel pudding; artisan cocktails such as the Corpse Reviver No. 2.
