Owner Christopher Losa and chef Elizabeth Binder defied the odds when they opened their trendy Italian restaurant on a forlorn block in the Mission. Most surrounding businesses look boarded up, but this place shines like the North Star, beckoning diners from all over the Bay Area. Horizontal wood slat walls and wine bottles made into chandeliers give the interior a polished look. The narrow space includes a salumeri, where diners can watch the meat and cheese being sliced; there's also a year-round patio in back. Losa's wine list offers selections you won't find anywhere else.
Specialties: Pappardelle with braised rabbit, eggplant meatballs, cheese and salumi service, bruschetta (six choices including one with egg and truffle salt), grilled whole fish, vanilla gelato with balsamic vinegar, exceptional espresso.
