Loretta Keller, who also owns the Moss Room in the California Academy of Sciences, has created a place that successfully bridges the divide between a sexy cocktail lounge and a restaurant. The interior has a midcentury modern feel with comfortable chairs, bright splashes of color, teak paneling and cork floors. The bold, rustic menu goes well with the hand-crafted cocktails and kicks off with snacks that include beautiful local sardines, salt cod brandade and duck liver terrine. There's also great pizza, vegetables and more substantial fare such as a small grilled chicken served with soft polenta and balsamic-caper vinaigrette.
Specialties: Fried green beans; truffled mushroom flatbread; Coco tacos; beef cheeks with horseradish cream; grilled whole baby chicken; vacherin (Swiss meringue with chocolate and coffee ice cream).
