This retail shop has only a 20-stool counter, but it's one of a handful of places named an "America's Classic" by the James Beard Foundation. Diners from around the world stand in line with hordes of regulars to nab one of the most coveted seats in San Francisco. The restaurant's roots stretch back to 1912, but in 1946 it was purchased by Sal Sancimino. It's now run by his sons and grandsons, who stand behind the counter and shuck oysters, spoon out warm clam chowder, and crack crab -- and jokes -- to adoring patrons. It's truly a San Francisco classic.
Specialties: Boston clam chowder; smoked salmon; cracked crab; crab salad; oysters and clams; seafood cocktails; fresh seafood to take home.
Open 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
