The Napa Valley was still a sleepy place when Terra opened 22 years ago, and the French-Italian-Japanese-influenced menu was a cutting-edge departure. Owners Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani, who also own Ame in San Francisco, continue to offer beautifully crafted food in an interior that feels like a Tuscan villa highlighted with thick stone walls, arched windows and tile floors. The diversity on the menu is evident in such things as the delicate hamachi carpaccio with yuzu tobiko and ponzu sauce, a major contrast to the bold, earthy spaghettini tossed with tripe stew and butter beans.
Specialties: Sake-marinated cod and shrimp dumplings in shiso broth; fried rock shrimp with organic greens; huckleberry pie with Meyer lemon ice cream.
Open for dinner 6-9 p.m. Wednesday-Monday and until 9:30 Friday-Saturday. (Bar Terra opens a half hour earlier and stays open a half hour later).
