Every time I go to Jardiniere, the prices -- a $22 scallop appetizer and $35 main courses -- make me gasp. But once the food arrives, the gasp turns to sighs of pleasure. It's the place to go for a special-occasion dinner before the Ballet, Symphony or Opera, but the food is so good that dining here is an event in itself. If you have time, the six-course $95 tasting menu is the way to go. The restaurant has a sexy, romantic aura, with brick walls, gauzy drapes over the arched windows and an elliptical bar under a shimmering gold dome dotted with pinpoint lights that replicate Champagne bubbles.
Specialties: Warm bread salad with artichokes and marinated Crescenza cheese; Diver scallops with pork belly jus; red wine-braised short ribs.
Dinner 5-9 p.m. Monday, until 10 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.
