(06-09) 20:10 PDT Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

After clinching the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, Carly Fiorina is trying to explain her comments caught on an open mic making fun of opponent Barbara Boxer's hairstyle.

While prepping for an interview with Sacramento's KXTV Wednesday morning, Fiorina was recorded laughing loudly as she described the three-term senator's hair as "so yesterday."

But during an interview Wednesday night on the Fox News Channel with Greta Van Susteren, Fiorina claimed that she was actually quoting a friend. She also said her own hair has been "talked about by a million people."

Fiorina was also heard Wednesday morning questioning Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman's decision to be interviewed by the network's Sean Hannity, calling it "bizarre" and "a bad choice."

Fiorina told Van Susteren that after apologizing to Hannity, she would be going on his show Friday.
