Tournament Karate

Karate is more than just kata practice and self-defense training; it’s about competition, too. Prior to the mixed-martial arts explosion, practitioners like Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis and Bill Wallace became legends in the field by dominating the tournament circuit. Even Bruce Lee got his start on the tournament circuit. Years before Lee changed the world with Enter the Dragon, he was performing at Ed Parker’s Long Beach International Karate Championships.

Tournament karate can be divided into several divisions. They include events in which practitioners compete in kumite (sparring), kata (forms) and traditional weapons. Large-scale competitions often attract martial artists from across the United States and around the world, while small-scale tournaments can take place within a single dojo.
