Taekwondo

Some believe it started life as the ancient fighting art of tae kyon. Others insist it is a derivative of Japanese karate. The truth is, it does not matter. Taekwondo thrives as perhaps the world’s most popular martial art. Its practitioners use their fists and feet as striking implements in a sport-oriented setting, where those natural weapons are used to score points in sparring matches. When self-defense is necessary, they use these tools, along with their knees and elbows, to target vulnerable spots on the attacker’s body with the goal of incapacitating the person as quickly as possible.

In 1988, taekwondo advocates managed a coup d’etat by transforming their martial art into a martial sport, which they showcased at the Seoul Olympic Games. Many practitioners argued that the no-nonsense fighting art was becoming just another sport, but the anger eventually faded. Most martial artists now recognize that the world is big enough to accommodate taekwondo stylists who are interested in self-defense as well as those who are more concerned with tournament glory.
