Specialties and Exotic Arts

Mention the term "martial arts" and the average person might bring up kung fu, karate and taekwondo—the most popular styles from China, Japan and Korea, respectively. That narrow view of the arts does not do justice to all the specialty and exotic martial arts that come from Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. They include Philippine escrima and arnis, Brazilian capoeira, Indonesian silat, Malaysian bersilat, French savate, Greek pankration and Russian sambo.

You’ll also find specialized subsets of the martial arts in this category—such as knife fighting, stick fighting, breaking, point sparring, full-contact sparring, women’s self-defense, bully awareness, yoga, internal energy and the law. Such focused pursuits appeal to practitioners wishing to hone their abilities for competition or self-defense.
