Activity for the period October 3 - October 9, 2005:

Updated at 9:01 AM (PDT) on Monday, October 3, 2005:

Two moderate earthquakes (magnitudes M=3.4 and M=3.7) occurred shortly after 2 AM today in the Sierra Nevada south of Long Valley caldera, approximately 13 km (8 miles) west of Toms Place. The events, which produced weak shaking in Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, were followed by more than twenty-four aftershocks registering magnitudes of M=2.5 or less. The quakes result from movement along a pre-existing fault and are not related to volcanic activity.

The realtime computer system also detected and located four other small earthquakes in various locations in the Sierra Nevada west of Toms Place. All of these events were of magnitude M<2.0.

Updated at 11:00 AM (PDT) on Tuesday, October 4, 2005:

Mild aftershocks continue in response to the magnitude M=3.7 earthquake that occurred in the Sierra Nevada 13 km (8 miles) west of Toms Place on October 3. The largest aftershock had a magnitude of M=2.4; the others were below 2.0. More than 23 aftershocks were detected by the realtime computer system since the last update at 9:10 AM on the 3rd.

Updated at 9:00 AM (PDT) on Wednesday, October 5, 2005:

Mild aftershocks continue to occur in response to the magnitude M=3.7 earthquake that shook the Sierra Nevada 13 km (8 miles) west of Toms Place on October 3. Since the last update, the realtime computer system detected and located six events with magnitudes of M<2.0. The system also detected five unrelated earthquakes in other locations in the Sierra Nevada south of the caldera.

Updated at 9:00 AM (PDT) on Thursday, October 6, 2005:

Mild aftershocks continue to occur in response to the magnitude M=3.7 earthquake that shook the Sierra Nevada 13 km (8 miles) west of Toms Place on October 3. Since the last update, the realtime computer system detected and located four events with magnitudes of M<2.0.

Updated at 1:00 PM (PDT) on Friday, October 7, 2005:

Since the last update at 9:00 AM on October 6, the realtime computer system detected and located three earthquakes with magnitudes of M<2.0 in the Long Valley region. All three events were located in the Sierra Nevada south of the caldera, and only one is an aftershock of the M=3.7 earthquake that occurred on October 3.

Elsewhere in the region, a magnitude M=2.1 earthquake was detected ~ 7 km (4 miles) south-southeast of Bishop. A magnitude M=1.2 event was also detected in the Adobe Hills area ~ 30 km east of Lee Vining.

Updated at 10:00 AM (PDT) on Saturday, October 8, 2005:

Since the last update at 1:00 PM on October 7, the realtime computer system detected and located three earthquakes in the Long Valley region. All three events were located in the Sierra Nevada south of the caldera. The largest event was a magnitude M=2.4.

Updated at 11:00 AM (PDT) on Sunday, October 9, 2005:

Since the last update at 10:00 AM on October 8, the realtime computer system detected and located three earthquakes in the Long Valley region. All three events were located in the Sierra Nevada south of the caldera. The largest event was a magnitude M=2.0.
