As far as reputations go, ESET's NOD32 is practically unimpeachable. Version 4 of the popular and effective antivirus and antispyware builds on that rep, emphasizing its community-sourced ThreatSense for preventing attacks before they occur, a slick interface, and some of the highest independently-tested detection rates married to low rates of false positives.

Installation is clean and straightforward. Greatly improved from its humble beginnings as separate scanners that once littered the desktop, NOD32 can be toggled between standard features and more advanced options. Scans were neither blazingly fast nor excruciatingly slow, but the real-time defenses produced no noticeable drags on system performance. NOD32 has consistently scored near the top of several independent antivirus testing organization ratings for finding the most malware. An uninstallation option is available, requiring a reboot. However, we found residual system files and Registry settings that had to be deleted by hand.

If you're confident in your clicking habits, you might not necessarily miss the firewall and spam filter that ESET built into its Smart Security suite that's based on NOD32. Even without them, though, NOD32's speed, accuracy, and lack of impact on resources make it a must.

    Version: ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.474

    "Not worth it...Paid too much"

    by Daris4u on May 18, 2010

Pros: It has a pretty good scan and detection rate...The Interfaze isn't too bad...and It's not heavy on resources

Cons: It doesn't like my IE7..And I don't like IE8 and haven't tried IE8 on it ...I notified Customer support which is awfull for a paid version of this anti virus...The protection also Isn't too slick on it.

Summary: Well I Used Avas t5 free.before that Avast 4...Finally thought I'll purchase a real paid AntiVirus and chose this 1 because the ratings for it were good.....I paid $50 Canadian for 1 year..Boy did I make a Mistake...My Avast5 free was heaven compared to this paid antiVirus ..and their Customer support for the free version was Much faster...I Also had 7 different Shields from Avast 5..I will definately never look this way again...Thanxs To Eset customer support....

"Our secret weapon makes it into the limelight, finally."

by hatchercr on May 3, 2010

Pros: Solid, lightweight, and unobtrusive; doesn't even seem to strain the elderly P3/P4 machines with micro-ram and the need to spin their drives forever. It's the program of choice for those who don't want excess fat injected into their machines.

Cons: My only con is that I wish Eset marketed their Business product in a more clear cut fashion - but this doesn't affect Home/End-users unless they're starting an 8-employee business next month.

Summary: Best home antivirus software there is and it'll be rare, if at all, that users see a false-positive intervention. And yet somehow, all the real malware is caught too (like 99.999 % is rendered impotent - according to the non-scientific and purely opinion-based survey conducted on myself). I've built many a home PC and currently tech-support them all, and I have yet to receive a single complaint of an installation that was botched b/c of NOD, or any other major problem for that matter. Ditto on the small business, single-subnet side of the coin. Like cnet's review says, if you're a more experienced beginniner or a power-user, you may not really need the firewall/spam option of the fancier program. I'd recommend it, however, for homes with multiple users that include humans under the age of 21 (dogs and cats can usually be trusted not to go straight for the porn). Want a completely transparent virus/adware catcher for grandma's computer (or your aunt-in-law's shiny new Best Buy purchase that tries to force-feed you Symantec)? Set the "Strict Cleaning" options in NOD's easy tree-branching setup window... then forget about it. Another feature I use a LOT is the simple website blocking abilities (good for doubleclick and other offensive spyware that makes up what we in the industry refer to as "evil" - unless we're the losers writing them of course). Check the quarantine every now and then so you can take some of the credit for all the evil that's been filtered out -- or if it's your own machine then you might be surprised at how many times NOD32 saved you from agony, headache, stress of money burning, and mental/physical meltdown. Trust me, malware (I'm sorry, I mean "evil") only has to be caught once or twice for NOD to pay for itself. ("Can I stop my hypertension medication now?" I can hear some of you asking. Um, well....)

    Version: ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.474

"King of Kings in Anti-Virus Software."

by ShwamSauce on April 23, 2010

Pros: Proactive scanning, the threat sense technology catches viruses "in the wild" Lean program, ease of use, light, yet amazing daily updates, browser warning for unsafe websites

Cons: Renewal rates are somewhat steep, and the UI could be a bit more informational

Summary: Out of all the anti-virus software out there to date, I feel NOD 32 is the best, Since buying it I have never had to worry about getting viruses or spyware attached to my machine. I would still recommend getting Malware Bytes as a just-in-case, but so far this is my second year using NOD, and I have yet to have to use Malware Bytes. The updates come daily, and barely slow the machine down. I also love the fact it consistently scans no matter what you're doing online to ensure safety. It doesn't have all the resource hog bells and whistles like Norton products, but once you look at what you get with those (anti-phishing filters, anti-spam filters, firewall) you tend to notice, either your browser, OS, or Email Domain have these type of options available for you, making NOD32 all the more sensible a choice. I think everyone who makes an investment in a new machine, or wishes to preserve an older one should give NOD 32 a go. You may find yourself in awe.

    Version: ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.474

    "Simply the Best"

    by smithy925 on April 9, 2010

Pros: This programs runs faster and has a smaller footprint than all other scanners. It's easy to use and I've received as many as three to four automatic updates in a day. I've tried many scanners ? ESET has given me piece of mind for many years.

    Cons: I haven't found one.

Summary: Bottom line? Go with the recommendations from Virus Bulletin, the most credible virus rating site. You'll find ESET at the top of their list every time, and they've won more scanning tests than all other companies. Also, consult the top computer experts regarding what scanner they use. It will most likely be ESET.

"Very problematic Antivirus! 40$ for 1 year- lost money"

    by yokon38 on March 26, 2010

    Pros: Imho - Non Pros

Cons: Problem with Internet Explorer! Bad 'Customer support"
Many-many messages "Your Nod32 maybe out of date'

Summary: I've bought Nod32 for 40$ for 1 year but with NOD32 I've got big problems!
Internet Explorer isn't working with NOD32!!! And my ISP informed me that this is not seldom but 'Usual Problem' with NOD32. And local customer service of ESET company didn't help me! And fresh installed NOD32 sends to me every day message
'Your NOD32 maybe out of date... Updates are impossible' For this reason I stopped using NOD32 (so my 40$ will be a gift to ESET Company) and start to use AVG free antivirus.

"A good all round anti virus program"

    by frank-turner on March 2, 2010

Pros: I use this as one of the main tools for virus threats. It is a great all round program, several times picking up virus threats for in progress downloading - not from the CNET site I hasten to add. It does not miss much.

Cons: Nothing that I do not like, it is dependable, seems slow but is is checking across 5 drives, in total nearly 600gb of disk space

Summary: Automatic updates to the program keep it up to date on the virus front, its works quietly in the background as well, rarely intruding whilst I am working on the laptop unless it detects some serious threat to the system. This particular program has performed flawlessly since i installed it, previous versions as well, it has not let me down.

    "space saving, protective"

by abulau on February 25, 2010

Pros: This software is space saving than other similar softwares, that's why i chose it.I got the basic protection from malicious attacks. A timely update is another remarkable point I'd like to highlight.

Cons: I don't know how to remove viruses when i was warned of being contaminated. Can them be autom atically removed, and i should just sit down and have a cup of coffee?

Summary: ESET NOD32 Antivirus is a very effevtively software which provides a comprehensive protection from online attacks. It takes little space, and won't interrupt the normal performance of other applications
