II. New CEO appointment

On June 8, 2006, the Council of the GEF appointed Mrs. Monique Barbut, a French national to a three-year term as its Chief Executive Officer and Chairman. Mrs. Barbut, who is currently the Director of the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), succeeded Mr. Leonard Good.

Expert Forum and High-Level Roundtable on Sustainable Land Management

The United Nations has designated 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). In order to focus global attention on this pervasive problem, the GEF is hosting an expert forum and high-level roundtable on sustainable land management to raise awareness at the country level.
