South Park (originally titled, South Park: Deeply Impacted during development) is a First-person shooter video game based on the first few seasons of the popular TV series of the same name. The game is powered by the Turok 2 game engine and was released in 1998 by Acclaim for the PC, Nintendo 64 and PlayStation.[1] A Brazilian version was published by Gradiente for the Nintendo 64. Acclaim had announced a sequel to be released sometime in 2000, however this project never surfaced.[2]

[edit] Introduction

A comet is heading towards South Park, causing mutant turkeys, killer cows, "Visitors", giant clones, living toys, and robots to flock to the small Colorado town. With an arsenal of unusual weapons, and guided by Chef, Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny must defeat these evil forces and stop the comet from landing.

[edit] Gameplay

South Park is a first person shooter. The games single player mode places the player in control of one of four characters: (Cartman, Kyle, Stan or Kenny). The player must defeat a variety of enemies using the various weapons found throughout each stage.

[edit] Multiplayer

In Head-to-Head mode, the players select a level, characters, and game style (time limited, damage limited, or unending). The PC version allows for online Head-to-Head play.

Upon reaching select stages in single player mode, codes are revealed. These can then be input into the "Cheesy Poofs Decoder" to unlock additional characters for Head-to-Head play.

[edit] Multiplayer characters

The following characters are unlockable for Multiplayer Mode:

(*) Denotes that they appear in the story mode as well.
(**) Denotes they're only available in the PC version. (***) Denotes that it's only available during gameplay, NOT through cheat codes.

[edit] Gadgets

These can, among other things, restore health, send opponents dancing away, flatten them with a cow. They are grouped into two categories and one subcategory.

[edit] Weapons

Various weapons can be picked up along the way. They are usually hidden on short cuts or alleyways or any other hidden place. Each weapon has at least two modes of fire.

  • Snowballs- Infinite snowballs are the default (and weakest) weapon. Secondary function: Yellow snowballs (there is a brief animation that suggests they have been urinated on). These snowballs have a small blast radius.

The rest of the weapons will need to be collected over time.

  • Dodgeballs - These are red dodgeballs, usually found grouped in lines. They can bounce at opponents, causing damage. Secondary function: the dodgeball is thrown much harder, doing more damage.
  • Toilet Plunger Launcher- This causes moderate damage by sticking to an opponent or object. Secondary function: fires three plungers at a time.
  • Sponge Dart Launcher - A rapid fire gun weapon. Secondary function: Dum Dum Bullets.
  • Phillip Dolls - A doll that explodes like gas grenades, raising a deadly green gas. Secondary function: Terrance dolls, act like landmines, releasing gas that can kill some enemies when stepped on - one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
  • Warpo Ray- This weapon has three fire modes:
Function 1 - Fires piranhas. In this mode, its damage rating is similar to Quake II's Hyperblaster.
Function 2 - Shrinks opponent.
Function 3 - Turns opponents into animals.
  • Sniper Chicken- Fires eggs at enemies. Secondary function: Sniper rifle function.
  • Cow Launcher- Fires a cow, which lands "ass-first" on an opponent's head, causing considerable damage (usually death) and partially obstructing the opponent's screen in multiplayer. This weapon is a parody of the Cerebral Bore weapon in the Turok games.

[edit] Head to Head Gadgets

These can only be used in head-to-head mode (yet accessible in single player with cheats). They are:

  • Alien Dancing Gizmo- Sends opponents into a dancing frenzy.

[edit] Power ups

Various power ups can also be found throughout the game:

  • Cheesy Poofs - Increases health by 10%.
  • Snack Cakes - Restores full health.
  • Beefcake - Gives invincibility for a short period of time.
  • Mr. Hankey - Acts as a shield until he dies.
  • Zipp! Cola - Gives a brief burst of speed.
  • Football pads - Acts as armor for a certain amount of time.

[edit] Version differences

The PC and PlayStation versions featured many improvements.

  • Music which was much improved and more upbeat than the Nintendo 64 version, as well as extra music tracks.
  • More playable multiplayer characters and more multiplayer maps
  • Improved graphics and environments (excluding the PlayStation version).
  • Multiple enemy types in each chapter, as opposed to just one per chapter.

However, the PlayStation version suffered from numerous bugs and poor draw-distance.

[edit] Cancelled Game Boy Color version

A Game Boy Color version was in development, but it was eventually canceled by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators, because they didn't want a Game Boy Color version of the South Park game made since they felt the game was not for kids. But they did keep a few copies of the Game Boy Color in comemorant of what was originally started as the first South Park game.

[edit] Reception

South Park was reviewed negatively by critics. GameRankings has only 41.22% the average score for the PlayStation version[3]. The PC version was only given the average score 51.72%[4]. GameSpot gave the PlayStation version a 1.4, stating that "South Park is definitely one of those games that is bound to come up when you start thinking about the worst game you've ever played."[5] IGN called the PlayStation version "fustrating" due to poor graphics, repeation of the voice acting, and lack of play value for the head-to-head mode.[6] GameSpot stated in the PC version that "A good license and good graphics aren't enough".[7] The voice acting, done by the original voice actors, were criticized for being repetive, isolated, and old.[7][6] The weapons of the game were also criticized for being unprofessional.[5][6]

Despite the hate from both versions, the Nintendo 64 version was praised for its 3D graphics and nice storyline, with IGN calling the game "just as funny as the Comedy Central series".[8] GameSpot stated in the Nintendo 64 version that the level design "it's really not very good on its own, but given the license, it at least makes sense".[9]
