[edit] Gameplay
[edit] Single Player
There are two modes for single player: Campaign and Boot Camp.
[edit] Campaign
Campaign is the main mode of Sarge's Heroes. The player plays as Sarge, the protagonist for many of the Army Men games. The player travels through several missions, completing objectives, killing enemies, destroying vehicles, and rescuing people. The plot starts out as the Tan Army is invading the Green Army base. Sarge rescues Colonel Grimm and they evacuate the base in a helicopter. In the game, Sarge discovers portals that lead from the "plastic world" to the "real world". The Tan Army is getting "Weapons of Mass Destruction" from the "real world" (toys and ordinary objects, i.e. magnifying glass). Throughout the game, Sarge rescues commandos of his own unit, Bravo Company. Sometimes they are in Tan bases, and other times he has to go through portals and save them from the "real world". To avoid the destruction of the Green Army, Sarge must destroy the portals and stop Plastro.
[edit] Boot Camp
Boot Camp is a training level, based on the actual United States Marine Corps Recruit Training. Boot Camp consists of training areas for all weapons, an obstacle course, and a "live fire course" in which Sarge is shot at.
[edit] Multiplayer
In 2-4 player multiplayer, players choose their character, faction, and difficulty. Players then select a map. The players fight each other until the number of preset required kills to win is reached.
[edit] Characters
There are several characters in Sarge's heroes from the four main factions in Army Men.
[edit] Green Army
The Greens are based on the USA. The player always controls a Green soldier in all Army Men games (besides multiplayer).
- Sarge (SGT. Hawk) - The main character of most of the Army Men Series. He always carries an M16 that essentially has infinite ammo, but can have more ammo added.
- Col. "Happy" Jack Grimm - The commander of the green forces. He is rescued by Sarge in the first level and appears in many cutscenes afterwards. Sarge also leads him to a portal in a later mission.
- Vikki Grimm - The daughter of Col. Grimm and Sarge's main love interest. She is captured by Plastro and acts as a spy for the Greens, pretending to be a traitor. She appears as a doll.
- Riff - Sarge's best friend and the bazooka man of Bravo Company, always seen with a bazooka, most of the time an M1. He is rescued from a large Tan Army base.
- Hoover - Bravo Company's minesweeper. He is nervous, but heroic if he has to. He is rescued by Sarge in the woods outside of a portal where they have taken Thick.
- Thick - The heavy machine gunner of Bravo Company. He appears slightly mentally disabled, and is rescued from a garden in the "real world".
- Shrap - The artillery specialist of Bravo Company, usually seen with a mortar. Being a surfer, he uses "dude" a lot, much to Sarge's annoyment. He is rescued from a Tan base in the arctic regions.
- Scorch - The flamethrower of Bravo Company, who likes melting things. He is rescued from a backyard in the "real world" in one of the last missions.
- Soldiers - Regular Green soldiers appear in a few missions, assisting Sarge and his men against the Tan troops.
[edit] Tan Army
The Tans are probably based on the Axis powers due to the WWII-era technology.
- General Plastro - The Dictator of the Tan Nation. He is large and wears a hat and aviator glasses. He appears in a few cutscenes, and if Sarge is "captured" in the Shrap mission, he will appear.
- Soldiers - Tan soldiers are the main enemies of the games. They are seen in all levels and use M16s, snipers, shotguns, heavy machine guns, bazookas, flamethrowers, and grenade launchers.
- Tanks - Tanks appear in several levels. They normally are destroyed by 1-2 direct hits with the bazooka.
- Helicopters - Helicopters appear in several levels. They are not hard to destroy if one knows how to destroy them, but will constantly fire at Sarge with their heavy machine guns.
- Robots - Appearing in a few levels, robots appear. They use two heavy machine guns and a flamethrower and take quite a bit of explosives to destroy. They appear to have been toys mobilized by tans.
[edit] Blue Army
The Blues are mostly spies and saboteurs, influenced by the French. They do not appear on the front lines very much, and only two appears in Sarge's Heroes: a spy and a tank.
- Blue Spy - The blue spy is a spy working for the Tans, and has something to do with the portals. Sarge captures him in the third mission.
[edit] Grey Army
Throughout the Army Men games, the Grey (and the Blue) have appeared allied with the Green, the Tan, or fighting for themselves.
- Soldiers - Grey soldiers appear in the Shrap mission. They are allied with Sarge and the Greens. If they are released from their cells, they will follow Sarge and attack Tans.
[edit] Reception
The dreamcast version currently holds a 8.3 user average score on metacritic[1]
