Help wanted: Many retailers hiring

Monday, March 1st 2010, 4:00 AM

In the midst of a dismal job market, some employers are welcoming applicants.

From Bloomingdale’s to Domino’s Pizza, a number of employers need to fill multiple posts in the city.

“There are jobs out there,” said Cathy McCarthy, senior vice president at employment Web site snagajob.com, which focuses on hourly jobs.
“It’s very competitive,” McCarthy cautioned. “We are seeing 50% more applications per job than two years ago.”

Retailing, where the national mean hourly wage for a salesperson is $12.04, is one bright spot. With sales beginning to improve, chains like Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Ann Taylor are slowly staffing up.

Bloomingdale’s has 40 job openings in the city, both store and executive positions. For a list of positions, check out BloomingdalesJobs.com.

Ann Taylor has 32 corporate and store job openings. Positions include part-time sales associates and e-commerce employees. Jobs are listed at AnnTaylor.com.

Companies that support retailers also are adding staff. Acosta Sales and Marketing is looking to hire up to 50 people. Positions are listed at snagajob.com.

Responsibilities include setting up displays and reporting out-of-date products. The pay ranges from $8 to $14 an hour.

Fresh from revamping its pizza, Domino’s is now hungry for workers. The fast-food giant is looking to hire 400 drivers, 100 customer service reps and 50 assistant managers in the New York area. Application info can be found at Careers.Dominos.com.

“We are seeing phenomenal growth,” Domino’s HR director said.

Drivers, who typically work 20 to 35 hours a week, earn an hourly rate of $7.25 plus tips. “It’s a great job if you want to earn extra cash,” she said.
Monster.com said its New York City postings jumped 24% in January compared with January 2009.

Growing job categories include computer programmers, sales and marketing positions, and retail workers.

“As seen in the past, sales jobs are first to hit the market as we recover from the down economy,” said Monster Worldwide spokesman Matthew Henson.
