PlayStation 3 system software

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

The PlayStation 3 system software is the updatable software and operating system of the PlayStation 3. The process of updating is almost identical to that of the PSP. Each update includes all previous update data.

The software may be updated by downloading the update directly on the PlayStation 3, downloading it from the user's local Official PlayStation website to a PC and using a USB storage device to transfer it to the PlayStation 3, or installing the update from game discs containing update data.

The 3D computer graphics API software used in the Playstation 3 is LibGCM and PSGL, based on OpenGL ES and Nvidia's CG.[1] For comparison, Microsoft uses the DirectX 3D computer graphics API.

The PlayStation 3 uses the XrossMediaBar (XMB) as its graphical user interface.

The current version of the software, 3.15, was made available on December 10, 2009. The Slim PS3 shipped with software 2.90 which was unique to the SKU. The software 2.90 changes appear on other SKUs once updated to software 3.00.[2]

[edit] Software update information

Due to the regular releases of updates to the system's software, the majority of the time newly purchased consoles will not have the latest version of the system software installed. However, any games that require a specific version of the system software will include the update required on the game disc. For example, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction featured v1.94. This update was only available via this game and the only feature it added to prior updates was DualShock 3 controller support, as this was the first game to support the controller without needing an update to the game itself.

[edit] Withdrawal of update 2.40

System software version 2.40, which included the in-game XMB feature and PlayStation 3 Trophies, was released on July 2, 2008; however, it was withdrawn later the same day because a small number of users were unable to restart their consoles after performing the update. The fault was explained to have been because of certain system administrative data being contained in the HDD.[62] The issue was addressed in version 2.41 of the system software released on July 8, 2008.[63]

[edit] Class action suit filed over update 3.0

System software version 3.0 was released on September 1, 2009. Shortly after its release, a very small number of users complained that the system update caused their systems' blu-ray drive to malfunction. In addition, John Kennedy of Florida filed a class action suit against Sony Computer Entertainment America. John Kennedy had purchased a PlayStation 3 in January 2009, claiming it worked perfectly until he installed the required firmware update 3.0, at which point the blu-ray drive in his system ceased functioning properly.[64][65][66] Sony later released a statement, "SCEA is aware of reports that PS3 owners are experiencing isolated issues with their PS3 system since installing the most recent system software update (v3.00),"[67] and released software update 3.01 on September 15, 2009. However, after installing 3.01, the plaintiff alleged the problems were not only not solved, but the new update created new issues as well.[68][69]

[edit] Error Code 80010514

A small number of PS3s have encountered error code 80010514 during disc operations.[70][71][72][73] According to various news websites, this error code is indicative of either a bad disc sector on the internal hard drive, a corrupted installation of a firmware update, or the incorrect installation of a firmware update intended for a different region.[74] Dan Lawlor, a 36-year-old IT consultant, has filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau, starting signing petitions, and launched a website regarding the error. Lawlor complains that Sony didn't adequately test the effects firmware updates 3.0 and 3.01would have on older systems. According to Lawlor, the 3.0 firmware update was intended to decrease Blu-Ray drive loading times by increasing the speed at which the discs spun, which in turn increased the amount of electricity drawn and heat generated. “The firmware update that was intended to decrease Blu-ray Disc read times by speeding up the motor and spindle, is causing an increased power draw,” he said. “This is fine for the newer systems made with 60nm [nanometer] and 45nm chipsets that use less power and therefore create less heat. But for the older, original 90nm chips, that already ran towards the hot side to begin with, it’s fatal. Too much power draw creates too much heat and leads to overheating and failure. It’s blatantly obvious to anyone who has worked with computers and laptops.” [75]

[edit] Compatible media formats

The PlayStation 3 is capable of photo, audio, and video playback in a variety of formats. It also includes various photo slideshow options and several music visualizations. The following table lists the photo, audio, and video formats that are supported on the PS3.

Image formats
Audio formats
Video formats

Notes:

  • ^ a JPEG files must be DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21 compliant
  • ^ b GIF images that display motion do not exhibit motion if viewed from the PS3's hard disk drive. Motion GIF images can be viewed in motion only online on a webpage, via the PS3's web browser.
  • ^ c WMA/VC-1 and ATRAC playback must be manually enabled in [System Settings].
  • ^ d SACD is only available in 20 GB, 60GB, Motorstorm 80GB bundle, and MGS4 80 GB bundle versions
  • ^ e DivX, XviD, 3ivx and other MPEG-4 Part 2 codec implementations work with a simple import into MP4. Xvid files are recognised as MPEG-4 since system software update 2.20, before this update they were recognised as DivX files.
  • ^ f DivX video files that are copy protected are not playable on the PS3.[77] DivX 3.11 files are now supported as of version 2.60.[17] Certain DivX and XviD Files have been known to not play on the PS3, even though they are recognised correctly, however deleting the first few black frames from the file with a program such as Nandub can rectify this problem.
  • ^ g MPEG-4 ASP is as yet unsupported
  • ^ h Main Profile and High Profile MP4 AVC / H.264 are supported.
  • The Matroska container (.mka / .mkv) is not natively playable by the PS3, but programs such as mkv2vob or tsmuxer can produce files capable of playback without re-encoding.
