Promoter threatens to strip Klitschko of IBF belt

Promoter Bob Arum says he is going to push for the decision to strip IBF and WBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko of his IBF title.

Talking to BoxingScene.com, Arum, who represents the interests of Nigerian fighter Samuel Peter, says this will happen if the Ukrainian avoids fighting an IBF mandatory challenger.

The first man in the line is Russia’s Alexander Povetkin, and Peter is right behind him.

"Strip him. The last time he made a [IBF] mandatory was 2007. He has to fight a mandatory," Aurm said.

The statement comes after media reports claim a possible fee has been paid to Povetkin to step aside, in order for a Klitschko-David Haye fight to move forward.

If Klitschko pays Povetkin to step aside, and tries to arrange a fight with Haye, Arum will file a protest with the IBF to force Peter's mandatory shot.

Peter has already faced the younger of the Klitschko brothers, back in 2005. The bout in Atlantic City ended with Ukrainian winning by unanimous decision.
