Benicio Del Toro to play Maradona - Movie News
A film about the life of iconic footballer Diego Maradona is set to be made. According to Showbiz Spy, the favourite to play the current Argentina manager on the big screen is Benicio Del Toro, who recently played Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic on the freedom fighter. Maradona, renowned for his infamous 'Hand Of God' handball against England at the 1986 World Cup, is as much known for his mercurial ability on the pitch as his partying and prolific drug-taking off it. "Maradona's story is as colorful and dramatic as any sportsman's who has ever lived," an insider is quoted as saying, "and that's why he's the perfect subject for a movie. He has had drama all through his life from growing up on the streets in Argentina to captaining and now managing his national team." They added: "Benicio is the logical choice to play the lead role. In fact the whole project hinges on him being Maradona." In 2004 Maradona suffered a major heart attack, but last year was improbably named as the new coach of Argentina after Alfio Basile resigned. His reign has been dogged by controversy, however, with Argentina only just qualifying for the World Cup finals.
