Drawing a Police Droid

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

Star Wars illustrator Jessica Hickman explains with these easy-to-follow steps how to draw a police droid from Season 2 of The Clone Wars.

Steps 1-4 are drawn lightly with pencil. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

Step One:
First draw the basic shapes for the police droid's head and upper body. Keep your pencil lines nice and loose as you decide what poses you'd like to create. We'll start with simple circles and triangles.

Step Two:
Next add the hat on the top with construction lines for the face and a quick circle for where the hand will be.

Step Three:
Now add a little more detail, including several small circles for the eyes, Imperial emblems on the hat and chest, and where the elbows will bend.

Step Four:
Since this character is a droid, you need to pay extra attention to the joints and perspective. Make sure to leave the pencil lines light in case you're not happy with it. Then you can erase your drawing and continue until you are satisfied.

Step Five:
Almost done drawing! Tighten up your pencil lines, and make the drawing nice and clean so you can prepare to add color.

Step Six:
I like to color with markers, but you can use anything you want -- crayons, colored pencils, or the computer! You can even make copies of your finished pencil drawing to practice using different coloring media. I add a lot of layers with my markers before I'm ready to ink and highlight the drawing. First I put down the grayscale using markers.

Step Seven:
After the grayscale I then start adding color. I add the black ink lines after I'm done coloring, so it won't bleed when touched with the wet marker. The police droid only has a couple of colors, so I just add blue and yellow (for the eyes) over the gray markers I already put down in Step Six! Wait until the markers are completely dry, then go over it with the ink outlines. Use a black pen to go around the head and body. It can be hard to get a nice, smooth line.

Practice makes perfect. There is a lot of detail, so be patient and take your time. When you're done with inking, add some white pencil to lighten up certain areas, and thicker white paint for the final, strong, white highlights -- like the dots in the eyes, for example. Now you're done! Don't forget to sign your drawing before you show it to family and friends.
