How to Move Your Stuff From One Mac to Another With Time Machine

Getting your old digital life to merge with your new digital life has always been somewhat of a chore. Fortunately, things got a little easier for Mac users trying to do just that.

Using Apple's backup application Time Machine, TUAW has put together step-by-step instructions for how to go about the crucial task, with pretty much zero chance of losing your priceless data (it's already backed up, see). The guide is super-simple, but then again, so is the process. Still, having your hand held through the procedure makes the whole thing much less stressful.

'Sesame Street' Coming to iTunes, YouTube, and Hulu

The show 'Sesame Street' is about as iconic as anything that ever hit the small screen, with generations of kids growing up and then sharing the same televised fun and learning with their own kids. Despite bein well over a quarter-century old, the show continues to be one of the most popular educational programs on TV, and finally is branching out online, spreading its content wings onto iTunes, YouTube, and Hulu.

The three services are currently engaged in a battle for online video supremacy, with Hulu and YouTube both competing to offer free and full TV shows episodes and films through a variety of partnerships and deals. In this case, however, full episodes will not be available for free online. Both Hulu and YouTube will offer a series of clips and highlights from the show; if you want more, you'll need to hit iTunes -- and cough up $1.99 per show.

On top of that, only relatively recent episodes will be available for download. The reason isn't because nobody cares about the old episodes, but rather because the show's distributors are working on a DVD collection of the first 10 years. iPhone 3G Overtakes the RAZR as Best-Selling U.S. Handset

According to a report from NPD, sales of cellphones have shifted in a manner which should shock and stun even a casual observer. Apparently for the first time in years, Motorola's ubiquitous RAZR has been overtaken in consumer sales... by the iPhone 3G. This is a watershed moment for handset sales in the US, marking not only a shift away from the dominant market leader, but a turn towards more complex, full-featured devices.

The news comes hot on the heels of NPD's previous findings, which still placed the RAZR in the top spot -- though with ever-decreasing numbers. In that same report, the iPhone found itself in second place, but it appears that flagging interest in the inescapable dumbphone coupled with the recent iPhone PR blitz have put Apple's moneymaker into the top position. The news is also buoyed by recent reports that Apple has overtaken RIM as the number two smartphone vendor, and a J.D. Power study which found affection for the device waxing in the extreme.

Overall, however, handset sales fell 15 percent year-over-year, and LG managed to snag the top brand position, with two models in the top five. Still, if there already wasn't a clear indication of the market moving towards both smartphones and touchscreen devices, this should give everyone a clearer picture of both the public's wants, and the power of Cupertino's ad-men. At Last, the iPhone Robot

Robots are awesome, we can all probably agree on that. Robots made from iPhones are basically an extension of that awesomeness, crossed with an element of unimaginable, ludicrous fun, which is why we're pleasantly surprised to see that such a device finally exists. Using a jailbroken iPhone 3G running some Ruby code, an Arduino CPU, a TA7291P motor, and 4 AA batteries, the creator is able to pilot the bot via Wi-Fi from a nearby computer, all the while recording its view for later playback.

The results look pretty cool, and trust us, you're definitely going to want to check out the video after the break. As far as we can tell, by the way, the lyrics to the song in the video are "iPhone with keyboard," which seemingly refers to this, um... iPhone with keyboard we saw earlier today -- apparently from the hands of the same craftsman, who seems like a very busy guy. Especially if he wrote the song!

Netflix Opens 'Watch Instantly' to Mac Owners Who Opt-In

Mac owners who have been waiting for Netflix to open up the 'Watch Instantly' option just got a little something to light up their day -- the service is now available to the public; or at least members of the public who opt in via a Web form. It's all based on Microsoft's Silverlight, so you'll need to download and install the plugin for your Web browser, but please mind the six device limit if you've got a small cadre of 'Watch Instantly' devices in use.

So if you can live with the fact that Microsoft tech is the lynchpin to your Mac streaming enjoyment, then hustle on over and sign yourselves up for that non-HD, but ample selection of streaming content.

Marware Game Grip Provides Handles for iPhone Gaming

We've seen a few accessories for augmenting the gaming experience on the iPhone that would give the device awesome functions similar to a game controller, such as the elusive and yet-to-materialize iControlPad and the totally fake JoyPod.

Well, Marware's Game Grip is sort of like that -- silicone sleeves that your phone fits into -- except that it doesn't actually do anything beyond providing 'handles' for your phone while you game. Oh, and it exists. So let's refer to it as the 'enjoyment enabler' of your iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G that can be used with headphones (just like normal), can be charged while gaming (just like normal), and has a 'cord management system' (kind of not normal).

'Rock Band' to Feature Beatles Songs -- Take That, Steve Jobs!

'Rock Band' Scores Beatles Songs. Take that Steve Jobs!

After years of negotiations, rumors, and quite probably begging, the Beatles catalog will finally be available for digital download -- but not on iTunes, and we're sure Steve Jobs is none too happy (despite numerous teaser announcements and rumors, the Beatles still aren't on Apple's online music store, or anywhere else online, for that matter).

So if not Apple with its iTunes Store, then who's the lucky distributor? Amazon? Napster? Actually, they've all been upstaged by 'Rock Band' makers Harmonix and MTV. That's right, a video game has succeeded where Apple's army of lawyers and messianic father figure couldn't.

MTV will have access to the entire back catalog of the biggest (and arguably best) band ever for the creation of a Beatles play-along game that will stand separate from its already established 'Rock Band' series. Details such as pricing, release date (all that's been announced is 2009), and exactly what songs will be included will have to wait for another day -- today's news was merely a victory lap.

Downloadable 'GameBoy' Theme Gives iPhone a Retro Console Look

Custom iPhone Theme Brings Shades of GameBoy

Anyone who spent their childhood playing on one of Nintendo's original GameBoy portable devices has that system's iconic pea-green colored screen permanently etched into their mind. It may have been ugly and low-contrast, but it is also a legend in the portable electronics world. Now, another pocketable icon has been updated to bring back shades of Nintendo's first handheld wunderconsole: A custom GameBoy-styled theme for the iPhone.

It's called iGameboy and was created by Rob Sheridan. There are two formats, one that shows the gray plastic surrounding of the screen and the GameBoy's various buttons, and another one (pictured above) that fills the entire screen with a soupy green and low-res icons. Sadly you'll need to have unlocked your iPhone to install this, and if you have custom applications you're on your own for making icons to support them (though the included list of icons is growing). New iPhone Software to Include Google Street View, Mass-Transit Directions

The T-Mobile G1's Google Maps Street View implementation is one of the slickest features of the first Android phone, but it looks like Apple's going to keep feature parity -- the latest builds of iPhone OS 2.2 seeded to developers have Street View, as well as the ability to give mass transit directions. That's pretty useful for cityfolk like us -- and we're also stoked that line-in audio is now supported in the SDK, giving devs the ability to create voice recorders and other interesting audio apps. Of course, there's no word on when 2.2 will actually arrive, but until then we suppose we'll live with regular, non-data-augmented streets. Lots of screenshots of the new features at the read link.
